A number of high-ranking officials of the United States of America, including Mr. Tibor Nagy, have called for the acceleration of decentralization as the solution to the raging, devastating Anglophone War. May we hasten to say that we were initially not against ‘decentralization’ per se. There are several degrees of decentralization, federalism being one of the forms of decentralization.
But we wish to make two issues with those pronouncements. The first is that it seems patently contradictory for the United States to call for DIALOGUE without (pre)-conditions and simultaneously prescribe accelerating decentralization as the solution. If accelerating decentralization is the automatic solution, does not dialogue become NUGATORY as of course?
Again, decentralization entails the devolution of powers. Decentralization in its present form in Cameroun is wholly inimical to the devolution of powers. The sole appointment by Yaounde of persons they choose to lord it over the locally elected representatives of the people absolutely negates the DEVOLUTION of powers.
Above all, many of those dying and suffering in the pursuance of the cause of independence do look up to the United States for mediation. That position the United States risks compromising by taking a stance for decentralization. Let the PEOPLE have a say!
Experience has shown that world peace cannot be guaranteed without a world gendarme! As the sole super power today, the United States does shirk that responsibility if they fail to stamp their feet. The starting point would be compelling the parties to sit at the table to search for a lasting peaceful solution under the auspices of the world body or one of its auxiliary organs.
Anything less would be a cosmetic measure that simply postpones hostilities. According the parties such respite is, to say the least, too dangerous! The inevitable is that more sophisticated weapons would be employed at the expense of human lives during any such future conflict.
It is preferable for us to take time and our responsibility now to find a lasting solution, emanating from the free will of the PEOPLE.
