Parliamentary Action Day for Peace: MPs receive accolades for peace crusading.

The Speaker of Cameroon’s National Assembly, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, and 10 other MPs have been recognized as peace ambassador by the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace.

This was on the occasion of the Parliamentary Action Day for Peace at the National Assembly on Tuesday June 30, 2020.

“While engaging the fight against COVID-19, we should stop and also have the courage to request for the declaration of ceasefire and end this senseless conflict in the North West and South West Regions”, declared the pioneer executive President of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace, Hon. Cyprian Awudu Mbaya. “The challenge I have is to continue working more and more for peace not only in my community, but in Cameroon and the international community as a whole”, said Hon. Peter Njume, who was among the MPs recognized as peace ambassadors.

The event was chaired by the Vice-President of the National Assembly, Hon. Théodore Datouo, who called on Members of Parliament to invest selflessly in the promotion of peace.

“The war against the coronavirus is an opportunity for States to take, without reservation, the path of multilateralism, especially against a background of active solidarity”, Hon. Théodore Datoua said.

The Parliamentary Action Day for peace revolved around the precepts of multilateralism and inter-parliamentary cooperation during a pandemic.

Normal Parliamentary Business

An exchange forum between Members of the Finance and Budget Committee of the National Assembly and officials of the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court also took place on June 30, 2020. The aim of the forum was to get the lawmakers acquainted with the management of public finance. The session which was the first of its kind for members of the Finance and Budget Committee of Cameroon’s 10^th legislative period had as theme. “Evolution of the jurisdiction of the Audit Bench and its impact on the management of the Regional and Local Authorities”.

The MPs were also schooled in the missions of the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court, as well as the exercise of the jurisdiction of the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court.

Senate scrutinizes four Bills

The bills were tabled for scrutiny on June 30, 2020 during a plenary sitting of the House chaired by Senate President, Marcel Niat Njifenji. The first bill is that which seeks to regulate statistical activity in Cameroon with the aim of reforming current legislation governing statistics in Cameroon.

The legal document establishes principles on the production of official data as well as the terms and conditions for coordinating statistical activity in the country.

The next bill relates to the ratification of the June 3, 2020 ordinance to amend and supplement some provisions of the 2019 Finance law of the Republic of Cameroon for the 2020 financial year. Another bill is that amending and supplementing some provisions of Law N° 90/53 of December 1990 relating to freedom of association with a view to organizing a specific management method for artistic and cultural associations in Cameroon.

The last bill that the senators scrutinized seeks to regulate artistic and cultural associations in Cameroon aimed at contributing towards promoting the spirit of creativity among members and preserving national and universal cultural heritage.
