2019 Private Media Aid: 85 newspaper publishers get their fair share!
In what has been generally described as the most transparent distribution yet of government subsidy to the private press, some 85 newspaper and online media organs have been declared eligible for the 2019.
The Anglophone press got its fair share, according to the distribution decision No. 060/MINCOM/CAB to Allocate State Institutional Support to Privately-Owned Media for the 2019 Financial Year signed on 7 July by communication minister, Rene Emmanuel Sadi. Up to 18 of the eligible press organs are of English expression.
Credit for this “big harvest” for Anglophone publishers goes partly to the pro-active stance adopted by Christian Ngah Kristian, the President of the Cameroon English Language Newspaper Publishers’ Association (CENPA), during deliberations of the selection committee, and partly to the listening ear given to his arguments by the communications boss.
For the first time, some publishers, mostly of the daily newspapers, will bag home up to 3.5 million FCFA. Meanwhile, bi-weekly publications and some regular weeklies will get 3 million FCFA.
The take-home package for irregular publications, magazines and those with uncompleted files ranges between 1.5 million and 2.5 million FCFA.
In yet another show of transparency, the money will be paid directly into the bank accounts of the publishers of the media organs. The move is intended to check any extortion from the paymasters or outright mismanagement that had marred previous distribution exercises.
