Agro-industrial giant to support Cameroon’s agric drive.
The Chief Executive Officer of agro-industrial outfit, Groupe Advens-Geocoton, Abbas Jaber, has pledged the company’s support to Cameroon’s efforts towards making agriculture the mainstay of the country’s economy.

Jaber was speaking to reporters on Friday after being received in audience by the Minister of State, Secretary General the Presidency of the Republic, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, on behalf of the Head of State, Paul Biya.

Abbas Jaber said their in-camera discussions bordered principally on the activities of the company which is a shareholder of the Cameroon Cotton Development Corporation, SODECOTON, and how it can support Cameroon’s vision of making agriculture one of its major sources of revenue and job creation. The business tycoon, who has French, Lebanese and Senegalese nationalities, not only hailed Cameroon’s expansive and fertile arable land which he said can be largely exploited, he also cited the country’s burgeoning population as one of the factors favoring its agricultural revolution.

President Biya’s agric vision hailed

“The Minister of State, Secretary General at the Presidency and myself discussed President Paul Biya’s vision on agriculture, which is totally in tandem with the vision of our company, Advens-Geocoton. We talked about the development of agriculture, specifically the cotton and livestock sectors. Advens-Geocoton has a very old history with Cameroon because we have been partners in the cotton development sector since the 1950s.  We are also a shareholder of SOCECOTON which was created in 1974,” Abbas Jaber told reporters after the State House audience.

Cameroon’s strategic location, population

He said Cameroon’s strategic geographical location and its position as the biggest and most diversified economy in the Central African sub region all play to the advantage of the company which has been doing business in the country for many years now.

“Today, Cameroon is at the centre of interest of the Group Advens-Geocoton. Cameroon is a geographically strategic nation in Africa. It’s surrounded by giants and has a population with a strong demographic growth potential. Cameroon is the breadbasket of the Central Africa sub region. As such, we are motivated and the Head of State, President Paul Biya, is quite aware of the role that his country plays for the future generations,” the business mogul confessed.

Jaber also spoke to reporters about the case he has been fronting for the international community to cancel the debts of some Sahel African countries, for the economic interest of not only the continent, but the world at large, given that Africa is the only continent capable of harnessing its agricultural potential in order to provide enough food for the world’s ever-growing population.

Abbas Jaber was accompanied to the State House by two of his collaborators. The company is a major agro-industrial operator in Africa with a fully integrated chain. It has presence in more than 15 countries on the continent, mainly in Central and West Africa. It is specialised in the production of cotton, cereals and other finished agricultural products. It’s also into wholesale trading and logistics.
