International Chamber of Commerce extends to Cameroon
International Chamber of Commerce extends to Cameroon.
Business between Cameroon and the international community is expected to become smoother as a result of the International Chamber of Commerce, ICC’s presence in the country.
Following the approval by the chamber’s World Council on June 23,2020, the body’s newest outfit has been established in Douala. ICC Cameroon is mandated to work in close collaboration with the Cameroon Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Craft.
After the creation of the new working unit, Perrial Jean Nyodog, former GM of Tradex, was designated to serve as Chair. In the meantime, Ebenezer Njanga, Chief Executive Officer of Free Market Foundation of Central Africa, was designated Secretary General.
Speaking shortly after taking the decision to open a Cameroon Office, John W.H. Denton AO, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce, said they chose to open the office in Cameroon for strategic reasons.
” We’re pleased to welcome ICC Cameroon to our growing community of Regional Offices around the world. As Cameroon is a critical economy in Central Africa, ICC Cameroon will equip local businesses, both large and small, with the expertise required to address emerging challenges and forge long-term solutions for the future,” Denton said.
The opening of the new office is a spinoff of a sub-Saharan Africa action group meeting. The meeting held in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and saw the participation of some 20 African countries. They discussed ways of assisting economies of the continent as they battle the hardship inflicted by the pandemic. In addition to establishing ICC Cameroon, the chamber also resolved to operationalise the African Continental Free Trade area.
The Cameroon office of the International chamber of Commerce will add to the success story of regional initiatives, by strengthening dialogue with local and international business communities. To better achieve this goal, committees and other working groups are to be set up to tackle arbitration and law issues; banking and finance; e-Commerce and digital economy; energy and environment; intellectual property; international trade, marketing and communication; and transport and logistics.
The Secretary General of ICC Cameroon, Ebenezer Njanga, said his team is poised to bring Cameroon’s special touch to the global movement. “ICC Cameroon is looking forward to working with the ICC Global Headquarters in Paris and with ICC offices and members around the world to bring the perspective of Cameroonian businesses to ICC’s policies and standards for global trade,” Njanga said.
The new team has a clear vision of what their objective is. “ICC Cameroon’s action plan includes activities that will allow companies to efficiently tackle challenges and issues that negatively impact international trade and more urgently, give support to Cameroon and the business community in our ongoing response against COVID-19,” the SG stated.
