COVID-19 cure: US-based Cameroonian female medic vouches for efficacy of hydroxychloroquine; but is branded ‘Trump hireling’.

Dr Stella Immanuel, Houston-based primary care physician, has vouched for the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine against Covid-19, claiming she has cured 350 patients using the drug whose emergency use authorization has been revoked by the Food and Drug Administration.

In a video that has gone viral, the Cameroonian-born medic challenged those diabolising the drug claiming it leads to heart diseases and diabetes to disprove her. She said neurosurgeons like Dr Sanjay Gupta have been sponsored to say hydroxychloroquine , zinc and Zythromax are ineffective.

Her outburst and claims have been rubbished as politically motivated with some of her peers saying she has been hired by the Trump administration to do the dirty job.

The medic said the majority of her patients are old men, one of whom was 92 years old. Some of them are diabetic and had hiccups.

She said she was ready to die to prove her point, even if detractors ridicule her as having done double-blinded studies.

Dr Stella Immanuel said those discouraging the use of the drug are watching Americans die like the Germans watched the Jews killed.

She said she was not afraid of being reported to any of the scientific boards because she is bent on saving American lives.

The female physician, sounding more like an activist, said it was unethical to watch Americans die when the treatment was available. She said she and her members of staff had used the drug for preventive purposes and found out it works.

The Houston-based medic discouraged the use of masks saying we don’t need the lockdowns imposed and schools can re-open.

Dr Stella Immanuel’s claims have provoked a spate of negative reactions from her peers and social media activists.

Identifying her as a Cameroonian with real name as Gwandiku-Ambe, Abraham Ariyo from Dallas, Texas, is shocked that she and her supporters in the video are discouraging the use of masks.

“Remember none of them were wearing masks. Also, this campaign tends to look for ‘easy manipulated doctors’ like Trump’s 2016 strange physician,”, he wrote

Doubting her credentials, Ariyo adds: “It remains unclear to me how she crossed from Pediatrics to Adult Medicine /Emergency to treating a 96-year-old patient.”

A medic who seems to know her so well gave this reaction:

“Utter nonsense, ma Snr. These are all Trump sycophants and the ones politicizing the matter. If HCQ is so effective and magical in handling Covid, then prove it! What is so hard in proving such an effective drug?. Stella, the only black face there is a wahala gal. She’s Cameroonian, did Med school in UI, we did residency together in NY about 25 years ago. Na so so fight. Very odious and uncouth woman. Lord forgive me, but those have always been my sentiments about the woman. Very cantankerous and always fighting everyone; we usually have to plead with her that her fights were totally irrelevant. Interesting that she don carry same wahala spirit go DC. I’m not impressed sir....

Anyways, what we know for sure is that HCQ kills folks with severe Covid; proven by credible study. I admit jury is still out on its efficacy for mild and prophylactic use.”

This other post seems to rubbish her claims altogether:

”I don’t want to burst any bubble. But this very event was politically motivated to support Trump claims. There is no science in it. She lives in Louisiana and Houston but came to Washington DC for this speech. She even said no need for mask!!. This physician is a Cameroonian who schooled at Unical Nigeria. She is also a pastor. I know her personally. She is a pediatrician and claims to be treating adults even 90yr olds. It’s all American politics. Election is coming by Nov. this year. Trump needs to shore up his image after a dismal performance in the control of the pandemic.Shes being used. I work in the ER in Dallas, there's is no evidence that hydroxychloroquine zithromax and zinc work. Many people have died while on these drugs. These are patients that I participated in their care. As it stands now, no known cure yet. Best thing is still prevention(mask, hand washing and Social distancing).”

Then another post wonders why only Cameroonian women are hired to do the dirty job for Trump:

“As usual look for a black man to play the fool. This is no difference to Yemga the Cameroon girl who was berating black Americans who went out to match for black lives matter. She was boasting of having two Master’s degrees as if that gives her the right to belittle a whole race.”

For all the attacks directed at the activist medic, she too deserves some credit.

Dr Stella Immanuel is not the first physician to insist on the use of hydroxychloroquine. At Houston’s United Memorial Medical Center, dozens of COVID-19 patients have taken the drug, according to Dr. Joseph Varon, chief medical officer.

“Hydroxychloroquine works,” Dr. Varon said recently. “I know a number of people think that it doesn't but we have treated more than 100 patients in the hospital with hydroxychloroquine and the patients have done well.”

Dr. Varon believes the treatment is effective, as long as it’s given early to patients and they’re closely monitored in the hospital.

“It usually takes about three to four days before you can start seeing an improvement in patients. By day four or day five, they really do better,” said Dr. Varon.

He plans to continue using the drug until he finds a better alternative.

The drug has traditionally been used against malaria until the pandemic broke out. President Trump touted hydroxychloroquine and said he took the drug as a preventative.

Recently, the FDA said the drug is not likely to be effective in treating COVID-19 and the benefits no longer outweigh the potential risks, such as heart problems.

“Hydroxychloroquine should have never made it to the FDA emergency use,” said Dr. Laila Woc-Colburn, an infectious disease specialist and associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine.

She said the drug can have harmful side effects.

“In our haste to make someone better, we wanted to try everything and sometimes by doing that you actually make it worse,” said Dr. Woc-Colburn.
