Fighting Covid-19: Alamine hails AfDB for disbursing another fcfa 57.7 billion for Cameroon.
Under the very high instructions of the Head of State, Paul Biya, the Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development has obtained a FCFA 57.7 billion loan from the African Development Bank, AfDB.
“The programme will contribute to the fight against Covid-19 and mitigate its adverse socio-economic effects on households and enterprises in line with the National Strategy for responding to this multifaceted crisis,” the Economy Ministry, Alamine Ousmane Mey announced.
The AfDB has been hailed for making the disbursement which is expected to help curb the spread of the virus, as well as address the impact of the pandemic on businesses, especially Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, SMEs.
“The Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development expresses the gratitude of the Cameroon Government to the African Development Bank Group for this new contribution to the inclusive development efforts of our country and shared prosperity”, Alamine noted.
This is at least the second disbursement the bank is making towards this fight. The European Union, the World Bank and other development partners had also responded positively in backing Cameroon’s response strategy.
According to details made available by officials of the AfDB, the money, which will be used to fund the state budget shall precisely cover expenses related to the steps taken to track, test and treat Covid-19 cases in Cameroon.
In an update last week, the Minister of Public Health, Malachie Manaouda gave details of the over FCFA 22 billion spent in the fight so far. He indicated that all the ten regions of the country now have at least a centre where suspected patients could be tested and treated if found positive.
It should be recalled that decentralizing the response strategy had been clamoured for, given that at the early stages, patients of far-off Regions had to wait for as long as three to five days to get their results. Samples had to be taken and transported to Yaounde, where diagnosis was done and the results communicated to the authorities concerned in the different Regions. Cameroon has so far recorded over 16,522 cases of the deadly Coronavirus. Some 14, 000 patients are reported to have recovered from the virus while close to 382 others have however, succumbed to the virus.
