Parliamentarians drilled on the respect of human rights in fighting terrorism.
The National Assembly has played host to a Reprodhocy/Repatic joint workshop on building the capacity of parliamentarians to mainstream human rights in the response of the criminal justice system to terrorism and the role of parliamentarians in appropriating digital technology as the driving force of economic growth and sustainable development.
The workshop which brought together members of government, members of the diplomatic corps, parliamentarians as well as experts from the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms was aimed at laying the groundwork for the emergence of a just and prosperous society.
Terrorism is one of the major challenges to the rule of law. In fact, the fight for human dignity consists not only of responding to the need for justice of victims of violent extremism, but also taking into account human rights in the application of criminal justice to perpetrators of terrorist acts, the president of the National Assembly, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, wrote in his speech.
The digital economy is an important lever for growth in line with the imperatives of sustainable development. The creation of technopoles constitutes a veritable growth backed by a strong and intelligent society, given that it impacts and restricts many sectors of the economy around new economic and organizational models.
Speaking to the media Thursday July 4, the President of Reprodhocy, Honourable Zondol Herssesse, said the main preoccupation of government today is to respect the human righst in the application of the laws in fighting terrorism. “We have regional and international experts who dwell much on that. We equally need training in order to arm parliamentarians with the knowledge to better supervise the population,” he said.
Meanwhile, the President of Repatic, Honourable Baba Julien, affirmed that today digitisation offers a unique opportunity in the society, but the quality of services of telecommunication is very bad. “When we don’t have a good connection we cannot benefit from all the advantages digitisation offers,” he said. It is against this backdrop that the experts are proposing to the government new strategies of improving digital and telecommunication services to Cameroonians. In terms of connection, the quality of services is very bad, impeding the smooth running of businesses which operate basically online. “Developing digital economy is the shorter way to have a very nice improvement in terms of job creation, in terms of prosperity and in terms of reducing import,” the Repatic boss said.
