COVID-19 Management Protocol at airports gets PM’S nod.
International air travel can now safely resume after government qualified as efficient the system put in place by competent authorities at the country’s international airport to prevent the importation of the Coronavirus into the country.
The green-light was given by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, on Wednesday, as he made an inspection tour of the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport to evaluate the system in place.
After the guided tour that took the PM to all the corners of the airport during which he also saw some of the physical logistics put in place, he expressed exceeding satisfaction, saying he will confidently report to the Head of State that the measures so far taken are satisfactory enough for the safe resumption of normal flights.
The logistics installed at the airport take into consideration basic hygiene prescriptions such as the washing and sanitizing of hands, disinfection of passenger luggage as well as social distancing. Sitting and standing spaces at the airport have equally been marked in a way as for passengers not to sit or stand close to each other while going through routine procedures.
Necessary Confidence
Accompanied by a delegation of government Ministers and administrative and security officers, the PM, in the course of his about 30-minute tour of the Nsimalen Airport, also had explanations from officials charged with handling specific aspects of the Covid-19 prevention and management system.
“I have gone through the circuit for those who are travelling and those who are arriving into the country. The social distancing and other hygiene measures have been taken into consideration and are being tested now. I think for the fact that we require a certificate to show that people coming in are free from the virus and that even when they come in, the conditions are present to ensure that the virus is not imported into the country, these measures give us the necessary confidence to advise and report to the Head of State for him to be able to take the necessary measures to reopen our frontiers for international air travel”, the PM told reporters after the inspection visit.
As for land borders, the Head of Government stated: “With respect to land borders, we obviously need, in collaboration with the Delegate General for National Security, the Ministry of Health, to verify and ensure that at that level too, things can go no normally”.
Long-standing preparations
Preparations for the full reopening of the country’s airspace have been ongoing for several weeks now. They have been the subject of a number of interministerial meetings chaired by the Prime Minister in the last couple of weeks. The Ministers of Public Health and Transport, aeronautic authorities as well as security chiefs, had been given specific instructions by the Head of Government on what should be done, each in their respective domain, in order to install an impermeable management system for Covid-19 at the country’s international airports and at land and sea borders.
Government, it should be recalled, ordered the closure of international borders on March 17 as part of measures to prevent the importation and eventual spread of the coronavirus. The borders have since remained closed except for specific and restricted categories of persons who have been allowed access into and out of the national territory.
Prime Minister Dion Ngute was accompanied on the airport inspection trip by the Minister of Transport, Minister of Public Health, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defence in charge of the National Gendarmerie, Delegate General for National Security, heads of the Airports of Cameroon, ADC, and the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authorities, CCAA, plus the Centre Regional Governor and his close collaborators.
