Housing minister tasks SIC and MAETUR GMs to rehabilitate constructed houses.

Housing minister tasks SIC and MAETUR GMs to rehabilitate constructed houses.

The Minister of Urban Development and Housing (MINDHU), Celestine Ketcha Courtes, has tasked the GMs of Cameroon Real Estate Corporation (SIC) and the Urban and Rural Land Development and Equipment Authority (MAETUR) to rehabilitate  already constructed houses, while making sure further constructions meet some minimum standards.

She also frowned at the disorder she observed at some sites in Yaounde meant to host low-cost houses.

The MINDHU boss handed down the instructions last week while visiting the Grand Messa, Biyem-Assi, Rond Point Express and Mendong estates.

She observed that some persons have clandestinely occupied property, already designated to the Cameroon Real Estate Corporation.

Sizing up the sites, she regretted the poor behaviour of some neighbours that has made life unbearable to occupants of the low cost houses.

“In the real estates, there is no sanitation. Places are dirty and we have strange people using the estates without any authorization. Others are constructing without making allowances for parking space! If you don’t have parking space, you will be forced to park on the road”, she groaned.

“And when you park on the road, people who need to pass cannot pass, and this is urban disorder”, Minister Courtes stressed.

Anarchy

On the sites, one doesn’t need to be told that the property has been illegally occupied. Shops have been erected here and there and some mobile vendors have taken the real estates as their fiefs.

But the Housing boss stressed that their fiefdom will end sooner than later as the time for reckoning has come. “I was on the field to tell people occupying this property to leave and to also dialogue with the Real Estate Corporation in order to find a way of bringing in people who can construct better houses. Houses that will consider sanitation, mobility and the security of the occupants”, she insisted.

The Director of the Cameroon Real Estate Corporation and the Urban and Rural Land Development and Equipment Authority were tasked to rehabilitate the already constructed houses, while making sure further constructions meet some minimum standards.

The Real Estate Corporation was created to build low-cost houses in order to help Cameroonians live in comfortable homes, yet at affordable rates. So far, the low-cost houses have been built in nearly all the ten Regional Headquarters.

Some strategic cities, beyond the regional capitals, have also been endowed with the state-designed low-cost houses.
