Committee regrets low execution of investment projects in North West.

Committee regrets low execution of investment projects in North West.

For the 2020 financial year, the North West was allocated 559 projects. So far 42 projects have been received; 165 projects on-going and a host of many others yet to take off. The execution rate as at July 30 2020 stands at 10.1 per cent physical and 7.3 per cent financial execution.

During the first semester 2020 Regional Participatory Follow up Committee meeting to evaluate the level of executions of public investment projects, reports from the various stakeholders indicated a very low execution blamed on a number of factors. It is worth mentioning that apart from the socio-political crisis rocking the region since 2016, the terrain has not been an easy one for the execution of projects especially in the remote areas of the region. Amongst the other setbacks, the issue of financial liquidity was mentioned. Some mayors are still new and are yet to master what is supposed to be done while some contractors are yet to receive payments for jobs done since 2019. This makes it difficult for them to carry out the new projects allocated to them. Some projects were received which were not mature.

Amongst the huge projects still pending as revealed by the Regional Delegate of the Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Chief Dominic Fotsop, there is the BABADJOU-BAMENDA road which is slow due to insecurity. The completion of the residence of the governor, the construction of the Regional Delegation of Agriculture, the ring road are still pending. He added that all stakeholders have to collaborate to foster the execution rate of projects in the region.

The Regional Delegate of MINEPAT frowned at some contractors and control engineers who are not serious. He regretted that a road was poorly done in Donga–Mantung which is really in a bad shape. He however called on stake holders to play their various roles to ensure the effective execution of projects. Meanwhile the committee chairperson for the follow–up of projects, Wallang Richard Akwo, called on all stakeholders to humble themselves to ensure that things go the normal way for the common good of the population, adding that much has been done and a lot more will be enjoyed by the population especially with the decentralization process which is on course. It is worth noting that the North West has always been amongst the best in the execution and budget tracking for the past years. Things turned sour for the Region in 2019 as it was ranked last in the 2019 financial year.  The event ended with a prize award from the committee chairperson aimed at encouraging those stakeholders who distinguished themselves in the various domains.
