Cameroon – Nigeria: Preoccupying cross-border security challenges.

The seventh session of the Cameroon-Nigeria Trans-border Security Committee that took place at the Yaounde Conference Centre from July 4-5, 2019 was organized at the time the two countries are facing teething security challenges to which experts attending the session have to propose concrete recommendations.

The Minister of Territorial Administration of Cameroon, Paul AtangaNji who also headed the country’s delegation to the session outlined some of the stakes and challenges facing Cameroon and Nigeria. He said the security situation along the common border that started improving suddenly deteriorated and became a cause for concern. The challenges, he said, include secessionist tendencies in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon, illegal exploitation of natural resources, highway robbery, human and drug trafficking and the trafficking in fire arms.

Faced with these challenges that come to add to the common war, the two countries are fighting against the terrorist sect Boko Haram, Minister Atanga Nji urged the experts to work hard to take stock of the security situation, identify and propose to the two governments appropriate measures and pertinent recommendations towards tackling the security problems.

The leader of the Nigerian delegation, Brigadier General EA Ndagi, reiterated that Cameroon and Nigeria were facing similar transnational security challenges. He disclosed that since the holding of the sixth session of the Committee in Abuja, Nigeria from February 5-6, 2019 a series of political and trans-national security concerns have occurred across the borders of the two countries that require sustained collaborative actions. He said the two countries must seek valuable options to reduce the vulnerabilities inherent in our borders that are being exploited to perpetrate trans-border organized crimes, terrorism, proliferation of small arms and light weapons as well as piracy. Cameroon and Nigeria must seek to reduce the vulnerabilities in the porous border that have been exploited by Boko Haram fighters.

Concerning the ongoing socio-political crisis in the North West and South West Regions, the Nigerian delegation leader said, his country will continue to support lasting peace in the two regions and expressed hope that Cameroon will emerge from the crisis as a united country where peace, justice and prosperity shall reign supreme.
