World Bank/IMF: Yaounde hosts African governors today.
Yaounde will today be the capital of the online version of African Caucus of Governors of the World Bank Group and IMF.
Alamine Ousmane Mey, Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development(MINEPAT), and Louis Paul Motaze, Minister of Finance (MINFI), will be jointly chairing the session organised under the patronage of President Paul Biya.
According to a press release from MINEPAT, the session will be opened by a speech from Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute. It is holding under the theme: “Protecting Africa’s human capital in the face of Covid-19: save lives, preserve the well-being, safeguard productivity and employment”.
Discussions during the conference will focus on the efficacy of aid during the coronavirus pandemic; the increase of service provision in the areas of health, education, water, social protection, and digital economy. Issues linked to macro-budgetary policies, and governance as well as contracts, the private sector and jobs will also be on the menu of the 250 delegates drawn from Africa, the IMF and the World bank Group awaited online.
The discussions are expected to enable a definition of a vision and ambition for Africa to construct and reinforce resilience to future shocks provided Africa comes out of the pandemic.
“The governors will equally examine the Memorandum of the 2020 African Caucus which will be presented to leaders of the Bretton Woods institutions in October 2020 during the annual assemblies of IMF and the World Bank Group”, the press release noted.
Set up in 1963, , the African Caucus which has 54 member countries, has as mission to let the voices of African governors heard within the two Bretton Woods institutions on development issues concerning Africa.
