Cameroonians hit Nyangono du Sud for ‘celebrating’ abortion on TV.

There have been criticisms on social media following pronouncements on abortion made by a Cameroonian musician, Arsene Kenya popularly known as Nyangono du Sud. He made the comments on Equinoxe television Sunday August 9th 2020.

On the program “Dimanche Avec Vous” presented by Estelle Maelle, the musician boasted to have led his wife commit abortion.

“On my return from China, I discovered that my wife was pregnant for another man. The pregnancy was already two months, so I took her to a doctor and we aborted the baby. I believe that she was deceived by the man that I wouldn’t return again to Cameroon”, he narrated.

The presenter Estelle Maelle getting the declaration burst into laughter and made fun with the pronouncement of Nyangono Du Sud of having led the wife to commit abortion.

In a Facebook publication of Etienne Pascal, a Cameroonian animator based in France, said the pronouncements on television on Sunday afternoon when kids are watching degrade morality and violate the law.

In a telephone interview with Mimi Mefo Info Monday August 10th 2020, Bar. Ebi Stanley, member of Cameroon Bar, says abortion in Cameroon is punishable by law.

“Cameroon penal code in section 337 to 339 makes abortion illegal. Defaulters and those found guilty of abortion are imprisoned for at least 15 days and at most one year and to pay a fine of 5000f to 200.000f.”

The deafening silence of authorities

Twenty four hours after the declarations of abortion on television by Nyangono du Sud and what has been considered an intentional silence of the presenter on the issue in the course of the program, there has been no official condemnation of the act.

According to Christopher, a Douala-based social critic, “I expected that Nyangono du Sud should be arrested and charged of forcing his wife to commit abortion. Besides that, he prided himself of having committed that on television thereby giving children and youths the impression that abortion is a good”.

To others, the presenter equally violated professional ethics by letting go declarations of what the law considers illegal in Cameroon.

Many say Nyangono du Sud, the wife, the TV presenter and the medical doctor presumed to have carried out the abortion need to be questioned.

In an extract of the program circulating on the social media, Nyangono du Sud accepts his infidelity to the wife while accusing her of doing same.
