The recent military raids on Bafut, Mezam Division, may not have been enough to subdue separatists. The fact that Fon Abumbi III is among the few traditional leaders still living in his palace and enjoying the support of his population all through the Anglophone crisis has not gone down well with Biya regime. Suspecting he may be conniving with Ambazonian fighters, his palace was last week raided by ‘armed men’.
The population of Bafut was taken aback when armed men in military attires forcefully entered the palace asking for Fon of Bafut, Abumbi III.
According to a source in Bafut, ' Armed men in military attires forced themselves into the Palace on Saturday, August 8th saying they are looking for the Fon, Abumbi III of Bafut, for what I don't know.'
The source said: 'The Bujong Cultural Hall which is part of the Palace of Bafut, including a tentative list of World Heritage sites since 2006 by the UNESCO was occupied by this men in military attires.
The Palace did not sleep breaking Saturday, August 8th because of heavy gun shots. The home of Pa Asanji of blessed memory and the campus of GS Bujong were also occupied by these men in uniform. The school was burnt after the grass was cleared by the same military. They also stormed the market, arresting close to 150 people mostly women taking away valuable items worth much money. These women were later released after paying a huge sum".
Talking to one of the Bafut elite, name withheld, he said:
“According to articles 2, 3, 4 of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property during armed conflicts, such areas are a no-go area for the belligerents. It is unfortunate that, the articles have been rubbished by those carrying guns”, he said.
According to him the Bafut palace has been desecrated.
“Those behind the desecration of our palace will not go unpunished. The people are angry because, touching the Palace is like touching the heart of a Bafut man. Our ancestors are not sleeping.”
