PCHS Bamenda mourns “slain” Head of Department.

Teachers of Bamenda’s most renowned secondary school, Progressive Comprehensive High College – PCHS, Mankon were in mourning mood last Monday following the death of one of theirs.

Ibrahim Pipayu was found death under Mile 4 Bridge Nkwen Monday, August 10th.

His body was floating in the river and his motorbike spotted below the bridge, few metres from where his body was discovered.

Witnesses hold diverse views. “Some think it was an accident while others think he was killed and dumped”, a source explains to Mimi Mefo Info.

But security forces who arrived the scene hours later, say Ibrahim (the victim), “was shot on the skull and dumped in the river,” according to preliminary findings. It’s not yet clear who shot him, a source added.

According to the School administration “Mr Pipayu Ibrahim, HOD of science department was shot Sunday night. Mortal remains HV been deposited at the BDa mutuary. He was in school last Sunday till 4 pm numbering benches that were to be use today for the GCE”.

Bamenda residents in shock

Bamenda is one of the cities hardest hit by the Anglophone crisis which is now in its fourth year. Residents in the city have noted that the area is getting less safe by the day since the Anglophone crisis morphed into an armed conflict in 2017.

Civilians have been targeted by government forces and separatist fighters in different incidents, leaving suspicions around such deaths. Months ago, Cameroonian authorities announced plans to reconstruct the conflict hit regions.

Minister Paul Tasong, the project’s Chair maintained that work must carry on uninterrupted despite ongoing battles in the North West and South West regions of the country.

UN condemns killing of humanitarian aid worker in Batibo

For close to four years today several confrontations between soldiers and separatist fighters in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions have left thousands dead.

There have been repeated calls for access to be granted to vulnerable persons by health workers.

The recent trend over the past weeks however has been the killing of humanitarian workers.

The latest victim was a humanitarian aid worker serving with the Community Initiative for Sustainable Development (COMINSUD) in Batibo Subdivision in the North West region.

““I am outraged and saddened by the killing of another aid worker in the North West region of Cameroon. On behalf of the United Nations and the wider humanitarian community in Cameroon, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, community and to COMINSUD”, Humanitarian Coordinator and interim in Cameroon, Mrs. Siti Batoul Oussein said.

Killed by unknown individuals, the aid worker who was an implementing partner for several UN agencies had left his home on August 7th.

This action, Batoul Oussein says, jeopardises not only other humanitarian workers, but the vulnerable persons they attend to also.

““Violence against humanitarian workers is not acceptable under any circumstances. It jeopardizes access to much needed assistance for people affected by the crisis in the South West and North West regions”, she added.

She expressed regret that the murder comes barely a month after the killing

of a community health worker in the South West region, and reiterated the United Nations’ call for all armed actors to refrain from any attacks or

obstruction of aid workers and humanitarian agencies on whose assistance so many lives depend.

Several humanitarian workers have often found themselves entangled in the violence, with one side often accusing them of being a spy or sharing information with the other. This has seen some kidnapped, tortured and in some cases like in Batibo, murdered.
