Huge flour mill to be erected in Douala.
An agri-food firm, Africa Food Manufacture, AFM, has announced it will be investing some FCFA 13 billion in the erection of an international standard flour mill in Douala.
Projections put forward by the firm indicate that at completion, the plant is expected to produce 350 tons of pasta on a daily basis. Dealers in the sector, who have been clamouring for the local transformation of cassava and potatoes, have said the plant “is a gigantic leap towards the right direction.”
Reacting to the news, George Essama, a cassava plantation owner in the Centre region, couldn’t hold back his emotions. “I can’t wait for the day my cassava will be purchased in bulk by factories. For now, I largely depend on local garri producers, who sometimes have a very low purchasing power,” Essama regrets. This step, which is being applauded by both farmers and other proprietors, has been made, thanks to a business partnership established between the Cameroon Investment Promotion Agency and the Africa Food Manufacture.
Expected to create over 700 new jobs, Gisèle Yamba, Marketing and Sales Manager of the Africa Food Manufacture, said the plant will also provide a platform for the production of pasta that offers the best value to consumers across the country. The brand’s growth is likely to be unprecedented, given that the Investment Promotion Agency signed for the firm to get tax and customs incentives of up to 10 years.
Economists have said the retail price for flour is likely to witness a significant drop when the plant hits the road running. When more jobs would have been created, pasta production cost would also be cut and a drop in price would naturally follow. This should change the face of home-made flour as it would be expected to stand the competition likely to be imposed by imported brands.
