Has University of Bamenda VC absconded?

Observers say her over two months leave of absence in US ‘smells fishy’, but aides say video-conferences and online staff meetings are now norm over Covid-19.

Is the State-owned University of Bamenda, considered, “the University of the Future”, on the verge of collapse, and complete implosion?

That is the sweeping conclusion made by some observers after observing that the institution’s head has been on leave in the US for over two months.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Theresa Nkuo Akenji, they say, has absconded from her responsibilities and taken refuge in the United States of America.

Since Prof. Akenji went to the USA to bury her father who died in the USA she has failed to return, claiming she's been blocked by the lockdown restrictions under the COVID 19.

Over two months of absence from the institution for a senior official of her rank has sent tongues wagging.

Her close aides, however, say there is no cause for alarm.

“Video-conferences and online staff meetings have become the norm at UBa since the advent of Covid-19. The institution is functioning normally and the VC’s scanned signature is affixed hot files while her deputy signs less important documents. Let’s not make a mountain out of a molehill”, an aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, quipped.

Besides, he added:”Isn’t she due annual leave like any other senior administrator? July and August are months during which lecturers and heads of department go on break in preparation for schools resumption in September”.

These arguments, strong as they are, have not dented the determination of Prof Theresa Nkuo Akenji’s detractors to crucify her.

Online reports hold that the real reason for her flight is alleged corruption charges being prepared against her and some members of her team.

The reports indicate she got wind of her file on corruption which has gone through CONAC, Supreme State Control and is now at TCS. Her arrest and the dispossession of her passport is imminent, for unaccountability and misappropriation, the reports claim.

"UBa is now on massive panic, as corrupt officials are busy cleaning financial files, while the bold ones are still doing shady contracts with corrupt contractors," a source quoted by Cameroon Chronicle Newspaper indicated.

The stress on the University has increased following the death of its registrar Prof. Victor Banilon Tani, a protégé of the Vice-Chancellor, the paper noted.

The paper further claims that lecturers in the UBa are divided into camps, one in support of separatists, while the other is loyal to state institutions. It alleges that despite the lack of activity on campus protégés of the “absconded VC” have ganged up to share the spoils.
