Enhancing Cameroon’s Living Together:

Educationist proposes “HIT” strategy to Musonge Commission.

SIR,

Subject: DISCOVERY OF THE LIVING TOGETHER’s TRINITY ‘’HIT’’.

We have the honour to come to your high office to make suggestions towards living together which we all have the duty and responsibility to foster.

Before our proposals proper, let us reveal that like the Holy Trinity, Living Together has its TRINITY known as ‘’HIT’’ which represents the first letters of the following words:

-Harmonization

-Integration

-Tolerance

When the first letters of these words are arranged in alphabetical order the trinity of living together, ‘’HIT’’ is obtained.

‘’HIT’’ is a great law of human behaviour, it is a natural law and above it all, it is a scientific fact.

JUSTIFICATION

‘’HIT’’ IS A GREAT LAW OF HUMAN BEHAVIOUR;

Unlike love that starts with two persons living together, ‘HIT’ starts with one person to any number for no one person can live in isolation. One person offers his services to the society to which he/she belongs in conformity with the society’s norms. Some societies have been known to have ostracized some who do not conform to their norms while others have violently resolved to jungle justice by physically eliminating any one who excessively violates their norms. In the more civilised societies, these defaulters are formally judged and imprisoned. When the husband does not tolerate some behaviours of the wife and vice versa then both cannot live together.

‘’HIT’’ IS A NATURAL LAW;

The walls of the house in which we live are built of masonry units and/or reinforcement rods whereas the roof is constructed of wood and roofing sheets. The two parts of the building are distinctly of different materials and the roof may not accept to integrate the rods from the walls into it. The walls on their part may not accept any part of the roof into it but accept the roof to lie on it and both can live like that for quite a long time to the point where nobody can believe that there was a problem. However as the Nobel Prize winner, Sir Isaac Newton, said in his first law of motion: ‘’a body at rest will remain at rest unless an external force acts on it to set it in motion; and further that a body moving uniformly in a straight line will continue in that state of uniform motion in straight line unless an external force acts on it to change its direction or brings it to a halt’’. One day when the wind (an external force) would act on the building, the roof would be carried away leaving the building without a roof. The fact that we have used a natural law discovered by Newton to prove this law discovered by Nwati implies that the law of living together is a natural law. Further, the natural law is neither voted by the National Assembly nor is it a presidential decree nor is it written anywhere but rather discovered and its law enforcement officers are the forces of nature: the wind, the sun, floods, disasters, evil, landslides, incurable illnesses, gravity, anarchy, death etc.

‘’HIT’’ IS A SCIENTIFIC FACT

When the white blood cells question the presence of the red blood cells and treat them as an enemy, it results in blood cancer and no treatment is possible. When the white blood cells question their living together with insulin in our blood streams and treat it as an enemy, we become diabetic even with the presence of a substantial quantity of insulin in our system and no treatment is possible. Many people have died from these conditions and the reasons why one human system should attack the other have not been scientifically revealed but we could induce that these systems do violate ‘’HIT’’ and the whole body has to pay the price of death. Doesn’t the Bible say that the prize of sin is death?

It can be shown that no country in history has ever violated ‘’HIT’’ and go free; the small as well as the big; the complex as well as the simple, the industrialised as well as the undeveloped, the monolingual as well as the multilingual: the USA, the UK, and the Russian Federation, the People’s Republic of China: have paid the price when they violated ‘’HIT’’ and living together was posed as a question. The smallest Rwanda paid the heaviest price in Africa when living together was posed as a question. However, the proof of a fact is not dependent on the number of examples presented, but these examples exist in history. How does the violation of ‘hit’ manifest itself in our Country Cameroon?

SEGREGATED TENDENCIES, STRUCTURES AND DESIRES:

CONFESSIONAL BODIES: some confessional bodies do not want their off-springs to get married out of that confessional body. This is what we all see in everyday life and nobody has ever questioned why; this is violation of ‘’HIT’’. Other confessional bodies have officially declared that if the name of their confessional body is expressed in the other official language then the confessional body would not be the same again which is not true for the Bible and the Koran both say that the word of God would be translated into all languages for everybody to understand it.

THE EDUCATION SYSTEMS: The desire for a people to retain some certificates for some states in countries like the UK is for pride and some peculiar reasons which do penalise the child who is at the centre of education. This desire is not the product of the bilingual nature of the country. This is true because the UK which is a mono-lingual country has four educational systems known as Frames: the National Frame, the Northern Ireland Frame, the Wales Frame and the Scottish Frame. In the face of these differences and desires, the central government retains and recognises the National Frame and seeks equivalences in the other Frames. Certificates that lie between those of the National Frame are considered local/regional certificates. This eliminates what we termed here as involuntary favouritism by the central government.

In the Cameroonian context, the two sub-systems have had harmonisation of levels at the basic and higher levels but we are still waiting for harmonisation of the contents which is a step forward.

The disorder still persist at the secondary education levels where the differences at the levels of education achievement have obliged the central government to practise involuntary favouritism (how?).

When one student obtains a certificate in form four called BEPC in the French sub-system, and another obtains GCE O’LEVEL in form five in the English sub-system and the central government wants to recruit one or any number of them for a job, would the syllabus for testing them be based on form four syllabuses or form five syllabuses? Whichever that is chosen the form five student is favoured. On the other hand, if the job offer was for Probatoire and O’Level, that is O’Level in form five and Probatoire in form six, whichever syllabuses chosen the Probatoire holder is favoured. Furthermore, the child who spent an extra year we all know also spent more, paid more fees, underwent more difficult tasks and at recruitment, would not be granted more index points. Doesn’t the bible say, ‘’for the servant who gives more to the master, more would also be given to him’’? From these analyses clearly there is involuntary favouritism because the government couldn’t make an average between two certificates obtained at different levels. Harmonisation in education is an academic exercise but not a democratic one, thus the fear of majority is supposed to be neutralised. The following certificates could not be expressed in the other official language: BEPC, GCE O’LEVEL, GCE A’LEVEL, PROBATOIRE, BACCALAUREAT, INTERMEDIATE TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE, and ADVANCE TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE. Switzerland that has the highest number official languages (four in number) has one Educational Frame. It is worth noting that both the Probatoire and the GCE O’Level are archaic certificates and archaic levels of education achievement in the French and English worlds respectively, and for this reason the usual text books like: Ordinary level Mathematics, Ordinary Level Chemistry, Ordinary Level Physics etc. from UK are no longer on our markets and bookshops since 1984 when O’level was abolished as a level of education achievement ditto for GCE.

BILINGUALISM: Bilingualism up to present has not been given the attention it deserves but for publicity. Truly speaking, it has been left to the mercy of willing learner willing speaker. However some subtle motivation existed and ended in the 1987s when ENS students doing the Bilingual Series underwent a probationary period in France for Anglophones and in Britain for Francophones. Something more ought to have been done to incite that needed internal urge to learn the other official language like; extra index points and all Cameroonians would have been Bilingual overnight. This would have been justified because to learn the other official language in adult age would entail extra material and laughter at initial stages which many people find it difficult to accommodate.

Technical Education had made significant strides in Bilingualism but these assets were neither recognised nor encouraged, like any assets, when left to the mercy of the forces of nature, have been eroded. The recent removal of English Language and French from the Advanced Technical certificate GCE, whatever this name means, is a clear demonstration. This is a destructive difference because the French Baccalauréat Technique is written with English and French as obligatory subjects. Unfortunately, after about sixty years in Unitary State we still talk of Bilingualism as a problem instead of a habit, this because efforts were not furnished to equip the schools from nursery to high school with French Teachers for English Schools and English Teachers for French schools. In this dispensation, and given that many Cameroonians only read for examinations, no reading to upgrade one’s level, no family libraries (students start selling their books right in school), and the other official language has remained a problem.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONS:

Whenever two substances are found in one container, the tendency for the substances to create sub-groups in the same container would be dependent on the relative strengths of the cohesive forces compared to adhesive forces. If the cohesive forces are stronger than the adhesive forces, then within a very short time the two liquids would create a boundary between themselves; an example is Guinness and Orange in the same glass. This phenomenon is what we call in Chemistry, ‘immiscible liquids’.

On the other hand if the adhesive forces overpower the cohesive forces then the tendency for any of the liquids to create a sub-group would be lessened and no boundary would exist between the two liquids, a phenomenon referred to as, ‘miscible liquids’ example; water in Orange or water in Guinness. Human beings can live in one ‘’container’’ and not show any desire to neither create sub-groups nor boundaries between themselves if and only if they obey ‘’HIT’’ failure of which they too would behave like liquids.

SPORTS AND CULTURE: This is the only domain where the differences noted in the above headings do not manifest. When Sports and Culture are concerned everybody speaks the same language (English and French).

PROPOSALS

Before making proposals, we thank the Head of State for his open-mindedness for proposals and the creation of the National Commission for Bilingualism, Multiculturalism and Living Together. This is the beginning of wisdom. Pharaoh of Egypt opened up and Joseph (a prisoner) interpreted his dreams which saved Egypt and the Eastern communities.

With this in mind our proposals are directed to the following:

TO THE NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR BILINGUALISM, MULTICULTURALISM AND LIVING TOGETHER: We urge you to send out publications, brochures, almanacs, paintings expressing ‘’HIT’’ (Harmonisation, Integration, Tolerance). Paintings at public places, stadia, markets, roundabouts should carry ‘’HIT’’ in bright colours. Propose to Government to grant minimum benefit, prizes, to those who have proficiency in the other official language to enable them acquire documentation in the execution of their duties (especially teachers). In the same vein, propose to Government to put in place a structure that would ensure that there are French teachers in all public schools from nursery to high school for English schools and English teachers for French schools. In this way, by the time someone passes through the school system, irrespective the level, to speak and write the two languages would not be a problem but rather an inherent habit.
TO THE MUSICIANS: We plead with you to include ‘’HIT’’ in your songs and music. Music has always been a unifying factor and by inserting ‘’HIT’’ in it would cement that needed spirit of living together. Note, when the children of God are happy and united, the Devil’s kingdom is in fire. We all must talk ‘’HIT’’, we all must sing ‘’HIT’’, we all must consolidate ‘’HIT’’ and we all must foster ‘’HIT’’.
TO THE TAXI MEN: We exhort you to propagate ‘’HIT’’, nurse ‘’HIT’’, maintain ‘’HIT’’ and carry ‘’HIT’’ to the interior of all cities. Let ‘’HIT’’ be our watch words. Print ‘’HIT’’ in various forms on your Taxis: eg: let us ‘Harmonise, let us Integrate, let us Tolerate. The only way to send away the devil that has brought evil to our land is to denounce him and keep on denouncing for the devil does not surrender.
TO THE CONFESSIONAL BODIES: We pray that you include ‘’HIT’’ in your preaching, eliminate destructive differences, and do all that is necessary to foster ‘’HIT’’. The Bible say, ‘’ forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespassed against us……..’’. In Peter’s vision, he was asked to kill an animal which was considered unclean and to eat it. When Peter complained that the animal was unclean, the Lord replied, ‘’never you say that which is made by me is unclean’’.
TO THE MAN OF THE ROAD: We earnestly beg you to preach and propagate ‘’HIT’’ wherever you find yourself. We remind you that when your neighbour’s house was on fire, everybody rushed to it with water, sand, soil and any material that could help to put off the fire but neither with questions nor justification which ever. If a ‘jangai’ house has stayed for long then ‘’HIT’’ is not violated. Anyone that lives in a society takes from the society but also gives to the society, that is he must obey ‘’HIT’’.
TO THE TEACHER: We exhort you to conceive songs, recitations and poems for our children basing on ‘’HIT’’. Let our children know that they are growing up in the spirit of harmonisation, integration and tolerance so that when they grow up, they would not part from it.
TO THE MEDIA: ‘’HIT’’ should occupy a promiscuous position in the media in general and continued for ever.
TO CULTURE: We propose the codification of Douala Language as the identity language of our country which would also be taught in schools. In the same vein, that the North West regalia be adopted as the identity dress of Cameroon.

Our wish is that all Cameroonians of goodwill would consider ‘’HIT’’ whenever they are in a position to formulate reforms for our country for ‘’HIT’’ preserves general interest. On the other hand, personal interest would fade like a flower in the rainy season. We regret that some reforms like Probatoire and GCE O’Level do penalise the innocent child. With the discovery of ‘’HIT’’, it would however, put an end to these lapses, pave the way for adhesion and unity forever.

We hope the justifications for our proposals are strong enough to be considered and recommended at a time when our living together is put to question.
