Protection of Cameroon’s biodiversity. MPs, government mobilise efforts.
As a result of several illegal transactions hampering the growth of the timber sector in Cameroon, the Parliamentary Network for the Management of Forest Ecosystems of Central Africa (REPAR) organized a two-day (July 3 to 4, 2019) workshop with members of government, technical and financial partners in the wood sector on how to best protect Cameroon’s forest from illegal exploitation. The ceremony was chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Theophile Baoro, in the presence of the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Cooperation with Parliament, Bolvine Wakata.
In his opening remarks, the Deputy House Speakers said government has never spared efforts in protecting Cameroon’s rich natural resources and dense forests. He appreciated the efforts of the parliamentary network in combating illegal forest exploitation and called on traditional rulers and every citizen to contribute to defending community forests and fighting global warming.
The Coordinator of REPAR, Hon Zam Jean Jacques, said the workshop is geared at stepping up efforts in safeguarding Cameroon’s rich biodiversity especially as the country has the second largest forest in the Congo Basin. The Member of Parliament said their activities on forest and timber conservation fall within the framework of the Head of State’s call on Cameroonians to produce what they consume and consume what they produce. Going by the lawmaker, there are several social and economic benefits Cameroon stands to gain should the illegality in the timber sector be addressed collectively.
A representative of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) said research by their institution indicates that for the past ten years, the wood sector in Cameroon has consumed more than it has exported with the internal market unfortunately dominated by illegal timber dealers. Going by him, given that CIFOR is a technical partner to REPAR, illegal and legal sources of timber supply need to be distinguished to fish out defaulters which Hon. Zam Jean Jacques said was the principal objective of their get together. Recommendations from the two-day forum have been forwarded to hierarchy.
