Ahead of regional polls: NW Fons, SW Chiefs told to return to palaces.
Ahead of the holding of regional elections and the impending start of reconstruction work in the North West and South West regions, traditional rulers of both regions have been urged to return to their palaces to supervise both operations.
The call was made yesterday in Yaounde by Paul Atanga Nji, Minister of Territorial Administration (MINAT), while receiving delegations of traditional rulers of both regions separately. The meeting was enlarged to include members of government and MPs.
The Anglophone crisis had caused traditional rulers of both regions to flee their palaces for fear of being victimised by separatists for acting as “enablers” of the Biya regime. They found their authority flouted by Ambazonian separatists who enjoyed the support of the local population.
But with regional elections in the offing and plans for the operationalisation of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West regions, it has become absolutely necessary for them to return and play an active part in these two operations in which they are expected to be the main drivers.
Atanga Nji warned that if they did not return to their palaces, the operations would not be effective.
But speaking to journalists, Senator Fon Chafah XI Isaac of Bangolan, himself a refugee Fon, expressed regret that their palaces had been desecrated by subjects in the name of the Ambazonian struggle. He said purification rites were necessary in his Bangolan village before he could return to his palace.
Fon Chafah promised to continue pleading with his subjects to drop their guns, come out of the bushes and get involved in the development of the village.
For Fon Njifua of Fontem, tolerance is the watchword and peace is needed for development to follow. He told journalists that normalcy would be a gradual process , noting that concrete resolutions were taken to ensure their safety.
Summarising the resolutions taken, Minister Paul Atanga said it was resolved that the chiefs should conquer fear and get established in their palaces. They also congratulated President Biya on re-instituting the House of Chiefs, he said.
