“No Mbororo person has died of Covid-19” - MBOSCUDA Youth President
Although the Mboro community are noted for practices like hugging which predispose them to certain diseases, none of them has died of Covid-19.
The disclosure was made by the Youth President of the Mbororo Cultural and Development Association (MBOSCUDA), Abdoul Karim Musa, on the occasion of the celebration of this year’s International Day for Indigenous People in Cameroon at the Kumba Women’s Empowerment Centre on 16 August.
Addressing the over 159 Mbororo population in Kumba, the Youth President of the Mbororo Cultural and Development Association (MBOSCUDA), Abdoul Karim Musa, revealed that the day was created by the UN because indigenous people around the world suffer marginalisation.
Strict compliance of barrier measures
According to AbdoulKarim, MBOSCUDA with help from the government, has made enormous progress. What has been achieved include education of the youth especially the girl child, women empowerment through vocational training programmes, sensitization of the community through national and regional seminars, acquisition of a settlement site within urban centres like Douala and Yaounde to accommodate the growing population of the Mbororo people, the ongoing construction of a “Pulaaku village” in Yaounde that will serve as a cultural centre for the Mbororo community nationwide, etc. The Youth President said they are in need of “Mbororo quarters” in most cities they find themselves. He disclosed that “no Mbororo person has died of Covid-19” and it means they are living in strict compliance of the barrier measures put in place by the government.
During the event, the second assistant SDO (Senior Divisional Officer) for Meme, Madam Njonje Hermia, advised the Mbororo community to send their children to school because education remains the backbone to any meaningful development.
“You people should not shy away from administration, rather continue to speak out what is disturbing you,” the SDO opined. The Divisional Delegate of Social Affairs for Meme, Madam Nwalipenja Susan Meango, narrated that the day was instituted by the United Nations in 1995 and was aimed at evaluating how indigenous people can be recognized in society and to fully integrate them in the development drive of the nation. This day, this year, was also to take stock how the Mbororo people have survived the Covid-19 pandemic.
Statistics reveal that in Cameroon, we have the Mbororos, Bakas and the Pygmies as indigenous people; they constitute 0.4 percent of the population. The event ended with the distribution of Covid-19 preventive kits to the Mbororo community in Kumba donated by the Divisional Delegation of Social Affairs, Meme. The kits included face masks, buckets with taps, and hand sanitizers.
