20 innovators bag home fcfa 50 million
Some 20 young Cameroonians with ideas to transform the country, in their little way, on Thursday, August 20, 2020, received cash awards of up to FCFA 7,000,000.
The contender whose project was considered best, in addition to his normal FCFA 2,000,000 got another FCFA 5,000,000 as special prize from the Head of State President, Paul Biya. The winner, Serge Armel Njidjou, has conceived a project to produce automatic sanitizers.
Reacting shortly after getting the award, Serge said sensitization has come to stay. Though it is primarily made to fight COVID-19, the good habit of keeping clean needs to continue even after COVID-19, he said. Best projects in the different categories also bagged home an additional FCFA 1,000,000.
Speaking at the award ceremony, the Minister of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, Achille Basselikin III, in the presence of a host of other Government Ministers, said the Protofund will fast-track the process of industrialization in the country. While the scheme seeks to bring industrial and social change, the Minister hinted that it will also promote new and innovative ideas that will attract investors, especially at the crucial post COVID-19 economic recovery era.
Presenting the road covered so far, the Director General of the SMEs Promotion Agency, Jean-Marie Louis Badga, said some 770 forms were filled while they reached out to 315 candidates. However, some 177 were initially preselected before eventually screened down to 50 and then 20.
