Artistes cogitate on music economy.
The Cameroon Music Council on June 11 organised a discussion on the theme: “Current urban music, what economic model?” at the premises on the French Institute in Douala. The panallists included music stars like Salatiel, Wax Dey, and video producers like Adah Akenji and music managers like Didier Kouamo and was animated by Brice Albin, a radio presenter. The discussion which included a question and answer session dwelled on issues concerning building of the career of an artiste, music production from studio rents to album production passing through promotion, avenues for making money and copyright. It is worthy to mention that the discussion was so hot with differing opinions making tempers to flare up at one point.
According to the president of the Cameroon Music Council, Luc Yatchokeu, the association was created to enable musicians reflect on issues concerning their common plight. He said the event is going to be organized every month on a specific theme. He urged artistes to massively take part in an upcoming cultural event ‘le Colatier’ which will take place in Yaoundé bringing together musicians from all over the African continent. “It will be an opportunity for local artistes not only to exchange experiences but also establish contacts with big names in African music,” Yatchokeu noted. The discussion also featured the performance of a budding musician known as Stephane Akam.
