University of Bamenda mourns again

The University of Bamenda (UBa) is in mourning again. It has lost two of its finest lecturers hailing from the same division in less than two months.

After Prof Victor Tani Banlilon, Registrar of the University of Bamenda, suddenly died on Tuesday July 7 , the University of the Future again suffered another loss last Monday when Dr Tume Kenneth Fondzeyuf, a Senior Lecturer of Performing Arts, died in a car crash in Yaounde. Both of the lecturers hail from Bui Division in the North West region.

Dr Tume died in a car crash in Yaounde at the 20th May Boulevard alongside his master’s degree student, Damasius Nwamtum. A small Toyota car having on board the two persons crashed into a heavy duty truck. Due to the violent nature of the collision very much visible on the car whose front part was completely crushed, the two occupants of the Toyota vehicle died on the spot.

Tume was also Divisional Delegate of Arts and Culture in Mezam.

He got married less than five days to the unfortunate incident.

Bamenda: Two civilians shot during military onslaught

The atmosphere in Ntarikon, Bamenda remained tense due to a military action early Tuesday morning.

In what has been qualified as a retaliatory move for the murder of one of theirs , the forces of law and order raided several areas, firing several shots in the air.

The Bamenda General Hospital was one of the places visited by angry soldiers. A patient at the facility said “the military invaded the hospital shooting randomly. Two persons were shot, a boy shot on his laps and a girl shot on her hand. This is after the killing of an element of the army rescue unit”.

“They decided to come to Rendezvous junction this morning and destroy people’s businesses. They entered into shops, removed ladies got dem well beaten”, a source at Rendezvous confirmed.

They went on to carry out a similar act in other parts of the town. “End of Tar Longla, back Longla is boiling with serious gunshots now.”

Another source narrated that “Ntarinkon as a whole is not very active this morning. Many shops are closed and very few people moving.”

Retaliatory attacks of this sort are not new in the Anglophone regions, as they often see civilians bear the brunt of the anger of the forces of law and order.

Government, however, maintains its position, asserting that the forces have always remained professional.

Court vindicates two soldiers over 2018 extrajudicial killing of civilians in Far North!

Two soldiers of the Cameroon army have been declared innocent in an ongoing trial over extrajudicial killings in the Far North region.

The soldiers were arrested alongside five others in 2018 after a video of women and children summarily executed, emerged.

They have since been facing trial at the military tribunal behind closed doors.

The BBC reports that on 17 August two of the accused, Godwe Mana Didier and Manasse Djakobei Johnathan, were found not guilty.

Their lawyer, Maitre Sylvestre Mben, the BBC adds, explained that they were found not guilty because they watched as others did the killings.

Authorities had tried to deny the participation of Cameroon soldiers but a BBC Africa Eye forensic analysis of the video caused government to swallow its words, leading to the arrests.

Calls for government to investigate other cases of alleged extrajudicial killings in other parts of the country have since fallen on deaf ears.
