North West Daughters of separatist fighter reunited with family
North West: Daughters of separatist fighter reunited with family.
Taken from their Bafut-based home in June 2020 during a special security operation (Operation Bafut II) by defence and security forces, to free the neigbourhood of separatist activities, Sonita, 17, and Geraldine, 6, both daughters of an alleged Separatist fighter, “General Aladji”, have been reunited with their family.
The teenagers were handed over to the Regional Delegate of Social Affairs, Nkwate Rebecca in Bamenda on August 23, 2020 by the Commander of the 5th Joint Military Region, Brigadier General Nka Valere. It was an emotional moment with Sonita and Geraldine on the way to settle with their sister in Douala with the follow-up of Social Affairs services in the Littoral Region.
The girls left the 5th Joint Military region after proper psycho-social support and start-up equipment to help Sonita train and emerge in a trade and school fees to move Geraldine forward in elementary school studies. The kids were handed over to the North West Delegates of Social Affairs, who saluted the human face of the nation’s defence and security Forces. She said the kids spent months with the defence and security forces because of lack of appropriate social facilities in the region to handle such cases. It was also a rare moment for Sonita to hail concern and care received from the Defence and Security Forces. It was against this backdrop that Brigadier General Nka Valere took time off to appeal to the population of the North West Region to stand with Defence and Security Forces whose mission is to give peace and the security of people and property a chance. He stressed on the professionalism of the forces on “Special Mission” with revelations that despite some isolated cases of delinquency, the Forces have been drilled to respect international humanitarian law during field operations.
