Army launches “Operation Clean Bamenda”; makes indiscriminate searches, arrests
The killing of a police officer in Bamenda last week, followed by slaying of the notorious Gen. Mad Dog has given the army more confidence. They are now bent on eliminating the last vestiges of armed bands claiming to fight for the restoration of the independence of the putative state of Ambazonia.
Soldiers have stormed several neighborhoods in Bamenda, North West region of Cameroon, carrying out systematic checks in private homes.
The operation, dubbed “Operation Clean Bamenda”, has paralyzed activities in the town, forcing the people to stay indoors for the last 10 days!
“The purpose of this operation is to protect and secure the population of the city of Bamenda and its surroundings. This is in response to frequent attacks perpetrated by terrorists and criminals such as kidnappings, robbery of banks and stores, looting, wanton killings of civilians and personnel of the Defense and Security forces,” states Brigadier General Nka Valere, Commander of the 5th Military region.
He calls on the population to collaborate with the forces of law and order. “The atmosphere of terror imposed by these terrorists and criminals on our population is unacceptable” he adds.
“They are present in most quarters now…Searching houses and so on,” a resident at Bianche Quarter is quoted as saying.
In another neighbourhood, a lady with an Identity Card near expiration was almost taken away until a relation paid 5.000 ( about $8 US ).
“We are all indoors, no way to go out because the military is everywhere around Mbengwi road, Nitop1,” a source told MMI.
“They entered my house and searched everywhere and even searched my phone”, another local testified.
Deserted streets in Bamenda
“The streets of Bamenda remain very dry, no bike, taxi, even private cars cannot be seen on the street, shops are also closed with almost everyone just at home. The military can be seen in their numbers on every street”.
Tuesday’s arrests come after last week’s terror meted on the population of Bamenda by security forces.
Many have raised their dissatisfaction with a series of measures taken over the past few days. Authorities among other measures have prohibited the circulation of motorbikes in several parts of town after a police officer was shot dead by separatist fighters on a bike.
