Coffee selection job gives hope to IDPS
Some Internally Displaced Persons in the North West Region have heaved a sigh of relief after embarking on coffee selection. After having put in days and weeks of work at the North West Cooperative Association, NWCA, they went celebrating.
The number of people displaced by the socio – political crisis rocking the region is on the rise. Others who have relatives in Bamenda are being offered accommodation while others depend on people of goodwill. In most cases, feeding becomes difficult and most of them depend on gifts while others go around begging for daily meals. The story is different with a group of Internally Displaced Persons Cameroon Insider met at NWCA recently.
The atmosphere at the coffee selection section was a busy one, with no time to waste as the young girls, boys and women worked so hard to meet up with their daily targets. Estella, a teenager, told Cl her dreams and expectations, after working with NWCA. She said she is an IDP now residing in Bamenda. She has a dream of becoming an agricultural technician in the nearest future. She selects at least 60kg of Arabica Coffee on a daily basis. This enables her to take home FCFA 5000 every week to enable her prepare for the coming academic year. Stella Keng is a mother and an IDP from Boyo Division. She said proceeds from the job will enable her feed her kids, pay her rents, hospital bills and even prepare them for school. She added that, instead of staying home to beg or depend on people of goodwill, she has taken a bold step to work and support her family. According to her, it is a unique privilege for her to have something to do.
Praying for peace
Many of them are praying for peace to return so that they can go back to their various villages.
The General Manager of NWCA, Timothy Waindim, said the institution, which is the highest producer of Arabica coffee with an annual production capacity of 950 tons has a corporate social responsibility to the distressed. He added that the institution has been offering opportunities to IDPs. While looking forward to the support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to improve upon their results, they remain committed to quality production.
