Investing in agriculture: Young Cameroonian breaks myth
The young Cameroonian agribusiness entrepreneur, Ambe Stanley Chenwi, who started off pursuing a career in mechanical engineering later switched to agriculture when he realised that he was not fulfilled in it. Stanley has constructed greenhouses in several cities across Cameroon and he runs a poultry as well as a rabbit and vegetable farms in the North West Region of the country. In just a few years, the passionate farmer has seen his poultry grow from 100 to 1,000 table birds. After obtaining his G.C.E Advanced Level equivalence in Mechanical Engineering, he delved into agriculture, obtaining a Diploma from College of Agriculture in Bamenda. His outstanding label and project idea would fetch him an award from the Cameroon government as well as an opportunity to gain more skills in Israel.
The young farmer is conscious of his roots. I come from a rural background. I grew up in Ndop in the corn fields and rice farm. My parents practised agriculture. They sponsored us from agriculture. I did automobile mechanics and was well trained as a mechanic. But I didn’t see my future in Cameroon in mechanics because the opportunities are limited. Not everybody can have access to the national shipyard company to work there. Something told me that if I could venture into tractor mechanics I would be fulfilled. But when I got to the school of agriculture, the option was not available but I found pleasure in management of farm enterprises which gave me the skills to become what I am today,” Stanley explained.
Prior to returning to the country, he managed farms under the United Nations system in the Central African Republic. He has trained several university students who have come for field experience and has also developed a scheme to pass on the skills to persons who have been displaced from the other parts of the Region.
In an exclusive interview granted Cameroon insider, the young entrepreneur speaks of his motivation, key strides, scope and major challenges.
