South West: Konye elite criticised for “negative attitude” towards development.
The Divisional Officer for Konye Sub-division, Meme Division, Atta Moses Ndep, has decried the negative attitude of elite and traditional rulers of Konye who are unwilling to cooperate with him to develop the municipality.
He was speaking during a preparatory meeting for back-to-school that took place at the City Council in Kumba on Friday, September 18, 2020. He said most of those attending the meeting were strangers who worked in Konye, and not indigenes. The Divisional Officer questioned the whereabouts of indigenes of Konye Sub Division especially the elite and traditional rulers who, he said, have totally abandoned their communities. He wondered aloud how Konye with 36 chiefdoms would have just three chiefs from Kolibuma, Mbu and Musanja attending such an important back-to-school meeting. Atta Moses pondered if it was insecurity that caused the chiefs and elite to stay away from the meeting. He called on the traditional rulers to revisit their shrines and perform rituals that would send away separatist fighters from Konye for good.
Some speakers who addressed the meeting talked on the need for security which they say is paramount. Chief Ellise Eseme Eseme of Kokobuma and President of the Konye Chiefs’ Conference pleaded with the administrator to assist in the installation of a B.I.R camp in Konye which he said would help the Sub-Division move ahead with its activities.
For his part, the Inspector of Basic Education, Ojong Besong, said it is a question of how the schools were going to open. How or whether parents would leave the buses to send their children to school? Whether the military will install their camp? He said if these questions receive positive replies, then there would be a way forward. Ojong Besong said before the crisis, Konye had 9,621 pupils and kids in 110 schools. He said during the previous school year, only 10 pupils wrote the First School Leaving Certificate. He called on all to put hands on deck to make things work for Konye this academic year.
