2 soldiers killed, 300 shops burnt in fresh Boko Haram strike!

The assymetrical war waged by the Boko Haram in the Far North region s far from over. After a lull in their activities which seemed to haved lulled Cameroonian forces into a false sense of security, the group has resumed its hit-and-run tactics with the village of Guidi bearing the brunt. For the sixth time in two weeks, the village in Kolofata has been victims of attack by members of the terrorist sect.

Monday’s attack had two victims including a member of a vigilante group, and a 56-year-old lady.

“They arrived around midnight, around thirty jihadists. As soon as we felt their presence, we climbed the trees and put out our torches. It was dark and so difficult to spot us and using our arrows, we hit some of the Boko Haram members…” narrates Boukar Dabi, a member of the vigilante group.

He adds that “… They succeeded in shooting one of our companions from the vigilante group but thank God he is not dead.”

The terrorists, he added, began looting; “… Goats, sheep, were all carried away and even the granaries of millet and corn were emptied. Several houses were broken into and various clothing items were taken away by the attackers.”

They would later on take off before day break.

The attack was the sixth recorded within the space of two weeks.

Guidi was not the only locality targeted. The next area to be attacked was the village of Zelevet in Mozogo Sub-division, Mayo Tsanaga Division. On Tuesday, 40 heavily armed members of the Boko Haram attacked an advance post of 2nd motorized infantry brigade (BIM), killing two elements of the BIR, and wounding one other. The gang also took away four arms after destroying the post.

Nguizaya Cécile, an inhabitant of Zelevet, is quoted as saying on hearing the sound of gunshots at 1 am, she took her children to take cover in the kitchen.

According to SeÏni Boubakar, mayor of Kolofata, the council which used to make some 350 million in taxes now has to rely on centimes additionnelles to survive. The destruction of shops in the market is evaluated at close to a billion FCFA, he said.
