NGO advocates reintroduction of adult literacy programmes
Against a backdrop of the prolonged crisis rocking the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon where children have been deprived of their fundamental right to education, the Nascent Solutions Inc., an international non-governmental organization, NSI, has celebrated the 2020 International Literacy Day with some kids in Kumbo, Bui Division of the North West Region. Faced with the situation, Nascent Solutions Inc. decided to organize 82 reading hubs all over Bui Division codenamed Mobile Reading Program, MRP, where the kids deprived of their education periodically received textbooks adapted to various levels from trained Library attendants and were drilled on reading skills.
It was in an attempt to assess this reading exercise that some 24 children drawn from the Njavnyuy and Meluf Reading Hubs including their Library Attendants, parents, other curious kids and some special guests converged on the Tobin Baptist Church premises, during celebrations marking the 2020 World Literacy Day.
Organized under the theme: Literacy, teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond, the children competed on reading skills, spelling tests, recitations that focused on the importance of reading, the devastating effect of the killer pandemic COVID-19. A roundtable conference on the importance of the Mobile Reading Programme crowned the event.
