New status for Army Health Research Centre
New status for Army Health Research Centre
Plans are underway to transform the Army Health Research centre known by the French language acronym , CRESAR , in Yaounde , into a Centre of Reference for Military Research and a Biomedical Diagnostic Laboratory on the high instructions of the Head of State.
The information filtered from a courtesy call which the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence Joseph Beti Assomo paid on the centre Thursday October 15th. It also emerged that the state –of-the art equipment are being tested for the biomedical diagnostic platform to go operational anytime soon. The Army Health Research Centre is currently a reference laboratory to test both civilians and soldiers for the novel Coronavirus pandemic. It has also developed proposals for the fight against the pandemic.
The Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo, and his entourage held a working session with officials of CRESAR.
“We are actively engaged in activities that range from Public Health within the military milieu and Public Health within the general population”, said Colonel Julius Nwobegahay Mbekem, Head of the Army Health Research Centre. “The visit of the Minister of Defence was to better acquaint himself with the technical platform that we have here at CRESAR and above all within the context of COVID-19 testing in Cameroon,” he said.
Created in 2000, the Army Health Research Centre, CRESAR, has as main mission to carry out research and biomedical diagnosis for the benefit of the Defence Forces, their families as well as other Cameroonians.
It has eight Molecular Biology Laboratories, two biomedical diagnostic laboratories, a liquid nitrogen production plant, sample storage room and an automatic electricity generator.
CRESAR has been playing a crucial role in the surveillance of infectious diseases in Cameroon. It helped confirm the outbreak of monkey pox in wild animals between 2014 and 2016, surveillance of human influenza as well as the diagnosis of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5NI) in 2016.
