Stabilization of Lake Chad region: German government increases financial support.

Stabilization of Lake Chad region: German government increases financial support.

The German Embassy in Cameroon in a communiqué has stated that the German government has released an additional contribution of 15 million euros, approximately FCFA 9.8 billion, to the Regional Stabilization Facility (FSR) for the Lake Chad Region. With the planned payment of an additional amount in 2021, Germany’s support for the FSR will amount to 40 million euros (FCFA 26.2 billion).

Going by the press release signed in September, the main objective of the assistance is to improve security, restore critical infrastructure damaged and provide livelihoods to communities affected by violent conflict in the Lake Chad region. The programme works closely with the communities of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria. In Cameroon, the stabilization programme operates in two communities in Amchidé and Limani with plans of extending to Maya Moskota, Fotokol and Blangoua in the coming months, all in the Far North Region.

German Ambassador to Cameroon, Dr. Corinna Fricke, is quoted in the communiqué to have said: “The Regional Stabilization Facility for Lake Chad is a joint effort of the national government, governors, security forces and civil society. In Amchidé, for example, they all work closely together to build partnerships for lasting peace and stability, and hopefully this will result in the opening of the Amchidé-Banki border crossing and the revival of regional trade. This would open up many job opportunities in the region, would help stabilize the region and reduce the recruitment of young unemployed people by Boko Haram.”

The Regional Stabilization Facility is a financing facility developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the support of Germany as well as the European Union, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It is a regional instrument aimed at facilitating the implementation of the Regional Stabilisation Strategy of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and the African Union. The initiative has civil-military cooperation at local and State levels to enable lasting stabilization results.
