Provocation of Anglophones: Ekale Mukete backs Cabral Libii!

Hon. Cabral Libii, PCRN leader, provoked the ire of Anglophones, including those of the ruling CPDM, when he proposed the imposition of a state of emergency by President Biya to help him track down separatist fighters in the North West and South West regions.

The PCRN leader was then accused of seeking to curry favour with Biya through such a controversial and vindictive stance. His Anglophone critics had no doubt that the proposal was coming from someone harbouring ethnic-cleansing tendencies.

But in a rare case of breaking ranks with his kith and kin, the freewheeling Prince Ekale Mukete has backed Cabral’s proposal.

Commenting on The Horizon’s headline of last Thursday, the legal luminary and one-time mayor of Kumba I Council said “Cabral is showing all signs of being an astute politician by being courageous to make difficult choices that may go against the popular view but which in the end is better for the country”. He argued that it was the use of the stick (state of emergency ordinance renewed every six months) against the Maquisard in the 1970s by President Ahidjo that led to peace and uninterrupted economic growth in Cameroon. Following is Prince Ekale Mukete’s viewpoint in its entirety:

President Ahidjo throughout his 22 years reign ran this country under a state of emergency ordinance renewed every six months. And with that he was able to contain the marquisard threat which was a far major menace to peace in Cameroon than the current Ambazonia crisis. Granted there were human rights excesses, but by 1970 the threat had been eliminated and the economy grew without interruption until he passed the baton in 1982. I therefore disagree with the Horizon headline, and think Cabral is showing all signs of being an astute politician by being courageous to make difficult choices that may go against the popular view but which in the end is better for the country, instead of the majority of opposition politicians who are hypocrites. The reality on the ground requires a state of emergency throughout NW and SW. If the American government can use such measures all the time - albeit for a brief period in the areas affected - during hurricanes, flooding and riots, then why not Cameroon? The truth is that the Government is giving the false impression that all is calm except small violent flashpoints from time to time. But I will feel safer under a state of emergency as the security forces will be on permanent alert and will be carrying out raids. Sometimes to obtain calm and peace we need to sacrifice with some pain. South Korea endured such a regime under President Park for 30 years, where you were only allowed 3 days of paid leave every year. But out of that sacrifice emerged one of the 10 largest economies in the world. Above is my viewpoint on the issue which I gladly share with you, although a controversial one.
