Bakweri Language classes begin in Limbe.
Bakweri language classes, running under the patronage of the Limbe paramount Chief elect, John Eluffa Manga Williams began July 9 at Spring of Wisdom Nursery and Primary School.
Speaking to The Horizon Newspaper, Elive Luma John, a linguist and the chief technician of the language programme, said the classes would begin with basic lessons such as teaching how to say the Lord’s Prayer and sing the national anthem in Bakweri Language, the teaching of basic morals such as how to greet elders, the Bakweri gastronomy, dress code and naming of household items.
Since the Bakweri language is the hub of their culture, Elive Luma who is assisted by Ndive Longonje Peter, vice chairman of the cultural committee of the Limbe royal traditional council, said the children shall also be taught their history. This is for them to know their origin such as knowing the origin of the Botaland people, the Isubu people and the Bakweri people fROm Buea.
Speaking further, Mola Elive Luma said the language classes are being handled by the Limbe Royal Traditional Council because the paramount Chief-elect, John Manga Williams, saw the programme as a laudable idea and decided to give his support. He added that they do not have a huge financial package and as such registration for the classes is only two thousand francs so as to enable parents to encourage their children to attend. Mola Elive Luma then hoped that if the necessary support came from the councils they had applied for assistance, future classes would be free of charge.
