Institutional News: Musonge Commission draws from Canada; ends “Bench-marking mission”.
The National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism (NCPBM) is drawing inspiration from international institutions with a similar mission. A delegation of the commission led by its Chairperson, H.E. Peter Mafany Musonge, “has returned to Cameroon more invigorated by fresh insights with which to carry out its mission” after “an enriching “Bench-marking mission” to Canada” which ran from 23rd June to 2nd July, 2019, a press release from the NCPBM dated 11 July states.
A similar “Bench-marking mission” had been undertaken to Switzerland in June 2018 where it also exploited the Swiss model to guide its work.
Musonge was accompanied on the mission, “undertaken on the very high approval of the Head of State”, by the Secretary General, Dr Chi Asafor Cornelius, Heads of the three Working Groups of the commission (Madam Ama Tutu Muna, Mr David Abouem a Tchoyi, and Prof Samuel Efoua Mbozo’o).
“During the mission, they visited institutions that have specificities in the promotion of bilingualism, multiculturalism and living-together adapted to the Cameroonian context,” the release further stated.
The institutions visited included the Canadian Ministry in charge of official languages and La Francophonie , the Ministry of Justice, and the Supreme Court. Others were the Commission for Official Languages, The Faculty of common Law at the University of Ottawa, the Canadian Foundation for Cross-Cultural Dialogue, as well as translation and interpretation services.
The delegation was accompanied to to all the institutions visited by the Cameroonian High Commissioner to Canada, H.E. Solomon Azo-Mbi.
The press release further notes that “there were meetings and working sessions between the host institutions and members of the NCPBM delegation focusing on how bilingualism, multiculturalism and their dual legal system are nurtured and nourished at all levels of public and private life in Canada.”
