Fitness business flourishing in Douala.
The love for sports by Cameroonians has given rise to a new flourishing business in the urban centres especially the economic capital, Douala. The influence of sports lovers is such that cannot be contained by the Parcours Vita or other available sports arena such that some people practise sports on the streets and others yet go the extra mile to pay to practise sports under the guidance of coaches or monitors. As such, commercial fitness centres are cropping up each day like mushrooms.
At the NAVSAF gymnasium in Bonamoussadi, registration cost 10.000 FCFA and then the subscriber pays a monthly fee of 15.000 FCFA. This gives the user access to all the machines in the fitness centre and the gymnasium under the supervision of a coach 24/7. In case the client needs special follow-up, it is done with his coach or monitor and the arrangement doesn’t involve the house. It is the same at the Vitality Sports Complex where people are expected to pay a registration fee of 10.000. The only difference here is that the user is given access to the centre on Sundays by payment of the sum of 500FCFA both for subscribers and non-subscribers. At the Happy Sport Clinic, there is a yearly registration of five thousand francs, another five thousand for insurance and a month payment of 15.000 FCFA. Here the facilities are many including a swimming pool, lawn tennis court, gymnasium and body building machines in the fitness centre. The peculiarity here is that the subscribers also benefit from the services of a dietician and there is a check-up before any follow-up.
