Germany ends military cooperation with Cameroon over Human Rights violations and crimes committed
Germany ends military cooperation with Cameroon over Human Rights violations and crimes committed by its soldiers!
Peter Tauber, parliamentary Secretary of State at the Federal Ministry of Defense, has announced a halt in military cooperation between Germany and Cameroon. Peter Tauber in his statement justified that the decision of the German government to end such cooperation with its Cameroonian counterpart is in response to tremendous pressure from the German parliament (BUNDESTAG). The Bundestag has held several hearings on the situation in Cameroon and sent some of its MPs to Cameroon to obtain facts on the prevailing situation in the country. A German parliamentarian, Stefan Liebich, describes the deployment of German military personnel to Cameroon as non parliamentary mission and unconstitutional. In his own words...."we only qualify ourselves as accomplice if we continue to support a country that is experiencing a civil war with military training."
The decision will see some German soldiers in Cameroon currently training elements of the Gendarmerie pull out of the country never to return again. The decision of Germany falls in line with the call of the Canadian House of Commons and the international community to isolate Cameroon militarily as she continues to wreak havoc in Southern Cameroons.
