2019 Presidential election: AU poised to examine Kamto petition for vote recount!
The African Union, AU, has accepted a petition from the National President of Cameroon Renaissance Movement, Professor Maurice Kamto, to recount the votes of the October 7, 2018 Presidential election. The court has given two months for the imprisoned leader and his party to present evidence of fraud and rigging.
Sitting in her General Assembly on April 24 to May 15, 2019, the African Union Commission on Human and People’s Rights said the petition of the initiator of electoral holdup was valid but insisted that it would now sit in another meeting to examine the files. This will be after Professor Maurice Kamto and his party must have brought evidence.
Cameroon’s Constitutional Council declared Paul Biya winner of the October 7 polls but the outcome was challenged by the runner up, Maurice Kamto. In one of a series of electoral holdup marches, Kamto and close collaborators were imprisoned in January 2019 and are still in jail at the time of the decision.
Marches Blanches: MRC Vice President, 354 others arrested
Police in Yaounde have arrested the first National Vice President of Cameroon Renaissance Movement, Mamadou Mota Yacouba, and 354 others, the party has revealed.
The massive arrests were carried out during a protest demanding the release of the party’s national President Maurice Kamto and collaborators. "Pro-Kamtoists" filled the streets of Yaounde and Douala to clamour for the release of Maurice Kamto and other political detainees, despite threats and bans from administrative authorities. While demonstrators in Douala occupied the Ndokoti neighbourhood, those in Yaounde marched around Poste Centrale.
However, they were ill-treated, arrested and locked up in different cells. The peaceful protests took place in Douala, Yaounde, Bafoussam, Bangante, Nkongsamba, Bare-Bakem, among other areas.
Lawyers of MRC have denounced the arrests, describing them as violation of human rights and rights to protest. The arrest of the first National Vice President, Mamadou Mota Yacouba, means the second national Vice President, Tiriane Noah Nadege, will now lead the party in all activities until Kamto and Mota are released or any of the two.
Speaking at the conference ahead of the protest marches, the first vice President Mamadou Mota had said they would march and face the consequences.
"I am the vice President of the CRM party and am the one who runs the daily affairs of the party. I will assume all my responsibilities tomorrow (Saturday) in relation to the law. I’m calling on the regime to protect protesters? They are Cameroonians and not only militants of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement", he said. The MRC has planned another protest on June 8, 2019.
