“Cameroon Insider”, SOPECAM’s litmus test to enhance “vivre ensemble”.
MINCOM, SOPECAM board members and other state officials.
The Cameroon News and Publishing Corporation known by its French acronym , SOPECAM, has given birth to another baby that will henceforth hit the newsstands. It is a bi-weekly called Cameroon Insider that will be published exclusively in English language to serve the English speaking citizens though helping French speaking citizens to acquaint themselves with the English content in the print media.
“We salute the coming of the Cameroon Insider and I will invite all our compatriots, possibly Anglophones to buy the Cameroon Insider and also invite our Francophone brothers to buy and improve their English. I think that it is our way to reaffirm the bilingual identity of Cameroon”, said the Minister of Communication, Emmanuel Rene Sadi, as he presided over the launching of the Cameroon Insider on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at the Yaounde conference center in the presence of the corporation’s top management staff and other top officials of the state.
According to the editorial line established by SOPECAM’s editorial team and endorsed by the Communication Minister, the newborn of SOPECAM is configured to educate, inform and entertain Cameroonians with more focus on Anglophones. The paper also has a task of venerating the republican values that promote peace, unity and co-existence in the Cameroon’s context.
Coming so many years after the Cameroon Tribune which has an English accent but a dominant French content, it is worth questioning if the paper will meet its objectives especially as the current crisis has neutralized the trust of the Anglophone community in almost every effort of the government that has to do with making concessions that suit particular needs of English-speaking citizens.
However, it is also good to appreciate the professional agenda of the paper which claims to give the readers of Cameroon Insider credible, complete and balanced information to be supposedly tapped from the right sources. It may be good to check out possibilities of this paper giving credible information especially in nowadays scenarios where the government needs more propaganda to silence some wrongs for the purpose of saving face before the international community.
It can be seen that the Cameroon Insider is a concession made to the Anglophone newspaper readers and also a communication weapon to serve the government in trying moments like this when the Anglophone crisis has morphed to another face.
Without necessarily judging the book by its cover, the move to start an exclusively English newspaper is worth welcoming but it will definitely be a great challenge to live up to the promises of the editorial line and professionalism when it concerns credible and balance reporting.
