There is a hill in Mbatu Village called Ntah-Mumbveh. Ntah means ‘hill’ or ‘mountain’, and Mumbveh is the ‘green grasshoppers’ that are known as Mungwin in Pidgin English. In the past, during specific seasons of the year, people used to go up that hill and pick grasshoppers. This was before the advent of the street lamps and very bright bulbs that we now know as ‘Mungwin Bulbs’. These days, the grasshoppers are drawn into the city by the lights at night. This is why people now use bulbs to trap grasshoppers rather than congregate up at Ntah-Mumbveh to pick grasshoppers.
Like most of the North West Region of Cameroon, this hill is part of a range of mountains stretching several miles across the village and overlooking in all directions both the village and surrounding villages. If you are a giant grasshopper sitting on that hill, you will have a 360-degree vantage point of the greater part of Mezam Division. I know this because I have childhood memories of farming vegetables on the plateau top of that hill, where crops flourish with merciless grandeur thanks to the cow dung that is left there from the migrant Fulani cattle herders who occupy the hill during some seasons of the year.
The sides of those hills are mostly rocky and unused land. Thanks to the tropical climate that makes sunlight available every day of the year, it has occurred to me that by planting solar panels on those hills, we can generate enough energy to power any endeavor we want to engage in. The endeavor I have in mind right now is the integration of digital technology, solar energy, e-commerce, and logistics.
I want to breed artificial grasshoppers called drones that will be living on those hills and be charged with solar energy. We will then install GPS devices in every home in Bamenda the way we do for cars that we want to track. By having a GPS location for each home, we will then do a digital map of the city. People say that Cameroon has a hopeless postal and e-commerce system because there are no street names and house numbers. But they end at complaining. I have learned to take every complaint and turn it into an invention because I now know that every problem is an opportunity in disguise. If every house can be located by GPS and we have an army of drones perched on a Digital Solar Farm, then we have just revolutionized the logistics system in the world.
When you shop online, the home address you will enter will be just a user ID and PIN to authenticate your unique GPS location. Your parcel will be loaded onto a drone and the drone will land on a landing plate outside your door and deliver your parcel with speed, ease, and precision. The size of your parcel will determine the size of the drone used. So, if it is just an envelope, the drone will be so small that people may not notice it flying by. If it is a basket of food or clothes, then the drone will be bigger, but there will be no noise or smoke because it is using clean energy.
Now, a drone is nothing more sophisticated than the toy cars we used to make with bamboos as kids. All it needs is projection and flight capacity, GPS guidance, and battery life to do a round trip. The Digital Solar Farm meets these needs by integrating cloud technology, GPS mapping, and solar energy. Fortunately, GPS technology is now as cheap as smartphones. So, before you wonder what I have smoked before coming up with such a plan, let me assure you that all the raw material is already available, and this plan is more feasible and easier to implement than building and managing a cement factory.
After piloting the Bamenda project at Ntah-Mumbveh, the next step will be to power every city in Cameroon with this revolutionary technology. This means that even if you are in Oshie, Fonfuka, or Mbalangi, you can do your transactions online and have your parcels delivered to you so long as you have an internet connection. Since the governments don’t want to give us roads and proper town planning, we could as well become spirits and turn the sky into our home. This is the power of transformation. Instead of wasting time reacting to the system, we could use that energy to invent new solutions that will make the system obsolete and die a natural death. When we are done with Cameroon, we will invade Africa, and before you know it, the whole continent will be one giant bowl of prosperity that has outsmarted the dinosaurs who now have a “free trade zone” on paper but have no idea what to do with it.
I am a visionary who is passionate about showing Africans that if they stop complaining and start thinking, they can transform not just Africa but the whole world, within the twinkle of an eye. I am not the type that will go and look for a White investor to pump a billion dollars into my projects because that will defeat the purpose for which I do what I do. If Africans want to eat palm oil, they must cultivate their own palm kernels. Only your lack of action will force me to consider the option of foreign investments because depriving humanity of the fruits of such dreams will be an unholy act.
