Overcoming stress at work: Women urged to speak out.
Work stress and sexual harassment are both killers of convivial working climate.
A debate how to overcome sexual harassment at job site and stress at work was organized in Douala on the 25 of May 2019. During the debate it was discussed how stress and how workers can overcome them. Panelists also talked about the effects on productivity and how employers can put workers at ease so as to improve on production. It was also a rare moment for workers to share experiences on what they did to overcome it.
While some workers resigned, others wrote to top management for better working conditions. It was revealed that women are mostly victims, although some men narrated their ordeal. Most women said they were forced to resign, while others gave in to keep their job.
On the theme “Harassment and stress at work: issues and challenges for companies”, one of the panelist Gilbert Odzo, director of human resources in Chococam, called on women to speak out when sexually harassed. He said if women start by denouncing men who harassed them sexually, the phenomenon will reduce. In his words, “expose them, women should not be treated like slaves, it is not good for the society, it will cause a lot of damages to the society, it will affect the social climate of the company which will obviously affect productivity”. To him, women should not be shy but be bold to tell their stories.
Odzo urged companies and structures to take severe measures against perpetrators. He was also clear that women who harass men should desist from such practice. The debate that was organized by “Dirigeantes” association saw the coordinator Bel Lauretta Tene adding that women are the hardest hit when it comes to sexual harassment.
