PASIE fast-tracks ambition to transform Cameroon’s mining sector.

Stakeholders of the project to improve on the monitoring of extractive industries in French speaking Sub -Saharan Africa, (PASIE) have organised a workshop in Yaounde to fast- track its ambition of boosting and transforming Cameroon’s mining sector into a veritable hub for development.
The 5-day conclave which opened Monday July 29 saw the participation of members of the Supreme State Audit, CONSUPE, the minister of mines, industry and technological development (MINMIDT) and the Canadian High Commissioner to Cameroon, amongst others.
Throughout the workshop discussions will centre on the different modules which can permit workers understand the various aspects of collecting revenue in the mining sector, the management of this revenue and the repartition of the revenues.
The training workshop has as goal to deepen the knowledge of auditors and stakeholders of the institution on good practices, techniques and methods of negotiating a mining contract, thereby reinforcing governance, transparency and accountability in the extractive sector for the sustainable growth of the four countries involved, including Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Mali and Cameroon.
According to the minister delegate at the presidency in charge of the Supreme State Audit, Mbah Acha Rose Fomundam who chaired the event, the extractive industry has become very important and countries from the sub-Saharan Africa are now beginning to see that it is carried to a higher level to promote development within their countries. “In Cameroon the project is financed by the Canadian government and it has enabled the training of so many of our auditors on how to audit. We have a pool of technical personnel that are competent to go to the field and boost the activities of these industries in Cameroon,” she said.
The minister went further to hint that at the end of the training, Cameroon, especially CONSUPE, will start investigating and controlling the mining industries. For 4 years since the launch of the project, PASIE has portrayed expertise in the management of the extractive sector and has equally ensured a solid training to hundreds of auditors in Cameroon.
As for the chief of the PASIE project, Alfred Enoh, the different revenues generated from the mining sectors basically include taxes and bonuses. “In order to manage the revenue, the government must put in place micro economic systems that can permit them take into consideration the volatility of the prices of the mining products, also the allocation of resources must be done in such a way that all the sectors involved do profit from the resources derived from the mining activities.
“Since the launch of the project, auditors have been sensitised on the importance and mastery of the sector. Now is time to test their competence on the field,” the chief of project affirmed.
