Douala business operators brainstorm on restrictive CEMAC regulations.
Despite all the regulations put in place by Cemac member countries to ease movement of people and goods within the sub region, there are still numerous upheavals which make business difficult and impose untold suffering and losses on business people. A meeting to examine the situation and map out possible solutions took place in Douala on July 26, 2019 in the conference hall of the Chamber of Commerce Industry Mines and Craft (CCIMA). The meeting that was open to transporter unions and economic operators saw the different stake holders outlining difficulties encountered.

From their worries, it was gathered that the transportation cost within the sub region is still very high. Pierre Lumiere Tiefang, member of the Cameroon Industrial Trade Union known by its French acronym as SYNDUSTRICAM explained that to transport goods from Cameroon to Chad cost from CFA 2 million to CFA 2.2million. He said the numerous checks on the way do not help matters. Taxes placed on goods remain high and corruption along the road is also a hindrance. The transporters and economic operators pleaded with Cemac countries to hasten the implementation of the regulations to ease trade within the sub region.
The official in charge of common market within the Cemac zone, Michel Naima, said they have been to other Cemac countries to get first hand information on the challenges faced by economic operators within the Cemac zone so as to seek lasting solutions. He said being the leader in the Cemac zone, Cameroon has to play a vital role in the amelioration of the business climate within the zone. To him it was necessary to meet face to face with business operators in Cameroon. He announced that the problems and proposals made by the business operators will go a long way in helping Cemac find lasting solution to the problems. He was aware that the execution of regulations to facilitate the movement of people and goods within the sub region is slow but hope that things will get better in the days ahead.
For the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Craft (CCIMA), Eken Christophe, his institution is ready at all times to assist Cemac achieve its goals. He said life would be better if business procedures within are made easy.
