Population laments over ‘catastrophic’ waste disposal

Bamenda's beauty over the years has been directly linked to the neatness with which the town portrayed itself. This neatness was not limited to the roads as the people even in the quarters had always resorted to clean-up days with which thorough maintenance was carried out by all to ensure the town’s facelift is sustained.
The days of such healthy living seem to be over owing to a new era. For over a long while now, the town of Bamenda continues to be littered with waste and stench emanating from a liquid at a fast decomposing rate which is said to be choking the people.
At the Rendez-vous quarter along the end of tar and the Longla Comprehensive College stretch of road just 400meters from the Bamenda city council premises, the scenario is a sad one. This road is almost reduced to a foot path as inhabitants can barely move. Coupled with this is an almost 3-month-old garbage heap whose resultant outcome on the life of citizens cannot be over belaboured. Recently, a report from Burundi said about 1800 people have died of malaria and a breeding ground as such can only tell what the people stand to face. Who is fooling who? Is the painful question to ask as most administrative authorities and especially the government delegate amidst cries have not made a public statement.
The ugly spectacle of littered streets is emerging just weeks after the installation of a new city secretary general. He had declared on taking office that he would make Bamenda the place to be. But several weeks after, tongues are already wagging as to the existence of a government delegate in Bamenda. Government delegates reserve the prerogative to contract waste management companies for the disposal of the waste. But inhabitants of areas like the Cowboy and Ngongham quarters are querying: Where is Ndumu Vincent Nji, government delegate?
