Back-to-school: Minister Fuh Calistus dangles 15million scholarship for Donga-Mantung.
The campaign for back-to-school in the North West and South West regions where education has been sacrificed for the past three years on the altar of egoism has reached fever pitch. After a series of pious intentions announced by some individuals and the civil society, real action will be seen before the end of this week.
In what is seen as the single most concrete project yet, H.E. Fuh Calistus Gentry, Secretary of State for Mines, Industry and Technological Development (MINMIDT), will on 15 August be launching a scholarship scheme for Donga-Mantung Division in the North West Region.
The minister will be dangling 15 million FCFA (3 million per subdivision) for the capacity-rebuilding of the youths of his constituency. The scheme to be coordinated by sub-divisional educational services will be under the supervision of the Senior Divisional Officer for Donga-Mantung Division.
The MINMIDT SS had been the initiator of the Ako-Misaje Scholarship Fund in 2008, which was narrowed down to the constituency that took him to Parliament in 2007, but with the wisdom of hindsight, it has been reoriented and reorganized to reflect the reality of the current situation in Donga-Mantung.
Speaking to journalists last Friday in Yaounde, the Minister said the scheme would be spread out in three phases; FCFA 5 million would be made available before schools resume for the motivation of teachers, students and parents, another 5 million when schools effectively take off for follow-up and sustenance of PTA teachers and others, and the remaining 5 million after effective school resumption for awards and merits to hardworking teachers and more support to dedicated students later on in the year.
Political watchers say creating a more inclusive scheme is an appropriate response to detractors who had reduced the dynamic member of government to a minister for Ako-Misaje.

SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL IN DONGA-MANTUNG DIVISION
As part of his modest contribution to education, H.E. Dr Fuh Calistus Gentry, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Technological Development, hereby announces the Scholarship Scheme for back-to-school in Donga-Mantung Division. This is a re-orientation of the Ako-Misaje Scholarship Fund, re-organised to reflect the reality of the current situation in our division.
Even though the scheme initiated in 2008 under the old appellation reached out to all the 5 sub-divisions in Donga-Mantung, the current realities of our country, and our division in particular, necessitates a change of nomenclature. The new appellation is Donga-Mantung Scholarship Fund intended for capacity rebuilding of our most cherished youths.
The scheme is placed under the coordination of the divisional educational services under the supervision of the Senior Divisional Officer for Donga-Mantung. Our sub-divisional educational services will coordinate under the supervision of the Divisional Officer.
This scheme is intended to:
- Reach out to children of displaced parents and orphans;
- Get PTA teachers in localities where many teachers have not gone back;
- Encourage parents who have difficulties reaching out to their children;
- Give out motivational prizes to hard-working teachers in places where school is operational.
As a start fifteen million (15,000,000) FCFA, (i.e. 3 million FCFA per subdivision) will immediately be available and the scheme be effective as from the 15th August 2019 (some two weeks before schools reopen).
The scheme will remain permanent to encourage education in Donga-Mantung Division and the amount will increase in future to motivate and encourage teachers (of the most noble profession) and students, to rebuild and compensate for the losses of the past three years.
