Back-to-school: South West stakeholders prepare for September 2.
Education stakeholders in the South West Region have in a back-to-school meeting at the Buea Council Hall on August 6, 2019, chaired by South West Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai, brainstormed on ways to effect school reopening come September 2, 2019 across the region.
Dr. Mbua Hannah Etonde, Regional Delegate for Secondary Education, indicated that they have put in place a task force to work with education stakeholders to ensure serenity in schools. She saluted security personnel for a job well done in the last academic year and appealed they increase their vigilance this year.
Igondoh John Atosoh of Employment and Vocational Training proposed that workshops be organized and scholarships be given to encourage trainees of vocational institutions who are internally displaced. That the state should support vocational centres which are functional with subventions and equipment to enable them host more trainees.
The three Regional Delegates of Basic, Secondary and Vocational Training however presented very disturbing statistics on school enrollment, schools razed, those abandoned and the affected population during the last academic year. There are fears that activities of armed men attacking academic institutions could be a melting intellectual suicide on pupils and students.
Governor Okalia Bilai indicated that all measures had been taken for all state-run institutions from kindergartens to secondary across the region to open their doors on September 2, 2019. Those of conventional and private sectors are also to liaise with the state. Education promoters were told to clean the school premises in their community so that children can return to fresh environment. Mayors were given ten days to engage their minimum package budget at treasuries and that all minimum packages must be available to all educational inspectors latest September 10, 2019.
