CENPA mobilizes over 50 journalists for peace-building; confounds detractors.
The Cameroon Association of English Language Newspapers Publishers Association, CENPA, proved that it was “a baby born walking” when it defied all the odds to successfully organise a seminar on peace-building in Yaounde just within a week of its legalisation.
Over 50 Anglophone journalists and publishers drawn from the North West, South West, Littoral , West and Centre regions converged on Yaounde last Friday “to reason together and see how we can contribute in our own little way to foster peace in our nation” as indicated by its president, Ngah Christian Mbipgo, at the opening of the seminar, chaired by a representative of the minister of communication, Metuge Ekaney Philip who is Inspector No 2 at MINCOM.
They listened to a series of presentations on the theme such as The Media and Peace Building in Cameroon by Martin A. Nkemngu, Communication Consultant and Publisher of Achas Safari Magazine; Media and Conflict Resolution by Taryang Tabe; Media and Peace Building by Rose Obah ; Media and Digital Rights, by Gwain Colbert.
An evaluation of the seminar showed participants overwhelmingly satisfied with the first outing of CENPA.
But that outing was nearly marred by an attempt by Dotta Ezekiel, publisher of Watchdog, to disrupt the event. It took the intervention of security forces to keep him at bay. In frustration, he resorted to blackmail, using libellous posts on the social media to defame the president of CENPA and berate the success of the seminar. A disclaimer to this effect has been issued by the secretary General of CENPA.

Dear Members of CENPA
Fellow Colleagues
I want to welcome you all to this Workshop on Media and Peace Building organized by Cameroon Association of English Language Newspaper Publishers Association.
The role of journalists in peace building as the theme suggests is not strange but we think it is timely for us to reason together and see how we can contribute in our own little way to foster peace in our nation.
I want to appreciate those who have left the Regions to be part of this meeting today and to say that we are convinced; you will not go back the same.
One day may be too short to exhaust the theme cited above no doubt.
We have brought from amongst us, professionals on the theme that will make our workshop memorable.
For the records, the Cameroon Association of English Language Newspapers publishers Association is barely one week old officially.
It is a registered association and operates in conformity with Article 7 of Law No 90/ 053 of 19/12/90 relating to the creation and functioning of associations in Cameroon.
Let me stress here that our association is apolitical and nonprofit oriented and has as objectives:
I. To promote Professionalism, Solidarity and Standards of its Members
II. To foster the Development of The English Language Press In The Country
III. To building Capacities for Employees in The English Language Press
Membership is open to all Newspaper Publishers of English Language Expression who show their interest, can abide to the objectives of the association and who have paid their complete registration dues of 5,000 CFA. New members are welcome.
This workshop therefore falls within the objectives of association and we count on you as our foot soldiers, to take this workshop very seriously for the very reason of its conception.
Once more I want to wish you a wonderful stay in Yaounde and may the Almighty who brought you here, take you back safely at the end of the day.
