PICCINI disburses 550 million to pay striking workers of Paul Biya Stadium.
PICCINI, the Italian company charged with the construction of the 60000-seater Paul Biya Stadium to host the opening match of the next African Cup of Nations, has been forced to cough up 550 million to pay disgruntled workers who have downed tools for the umpteenth time.
In a communique signed August 15, PICCINI’s President said the payment may last up to September.
“250 million FCFA from Friday, August 23 and a second instalment of 300 million FCFA to unlock end of August,” reads the communique translated by TWIF News.
The rest, according to the PICCINI’S boss, will be paid by the “end of September”. He however failed to mention the amount of the next disbursement.
PICCINI also assured that “technical provisions are continuing to revive work on the site.”
Work on the construction site of the Olembe stadium has been experiencing frequent mood swings, with workers complaining of accumulating wage arrears.
Protests have often caused several shutdowns, resulting indelays in the delivery of the infrastructure.
Considering the fact that Cameroon was stripped of its AFCON 2019 hosting rights, the government is working extra hard to prevent another withdrawal.
The country’s sport infrastructure is expected to be tested next year when Cameroon hosts the CHAN 2020.
